Because politicians start reversing their belief system and pandering for votes.
"Just as expected, the Obama administration is opening the waters off the East Coast to oil and gas exploration, approving a plan on Friday to allow seismic tests from Delaware to Florida’s Cape Canaveral.
The decision is a first step to what could be the first Atlantic offshore drilling in decades, with the energy industry mostly interested in waters off Virginia and the Carolinas."

He has to clear a path for his successor because he now owes the party bosses that much.
Come Oct 1 of this year, the new Fed fiscal yr 2015 begins which will be the last one in which anyone inside the beltway actually pays him any mind. A year from that will be Oct 1 2015 which will "unofficially" mark him as a lame-duck after which the chattering class will only be interested in the quadrennial beauty pageant known as the national GOP primaries.
Don't expect to see a FY2016 budget enacted until shortly before the proposed Feb 1, 2016 Iowa caucuses, after threats of another gov't shutdown.
If Hillary runs, the Dems of course will go through the motions of hosting a nominating convention.

Mr. Roxy, it's not about Obama. Both Virginia and North Carolina have tight Senate races. This is being announced to give the politicians in that state a boost.
If Obama were truly interested in energy, he would have made a decision on the Keystone Pipeline. We saw Mary Landrieu do a complete change of mind and start begging Obama for it because she's in big trouble in her state. Obama hung her out to dry.

I agree 100%. He seems like a likable enough fellow but I've been consistent in suggesting that he's a politico first and foremost. And I'm not so naive as to expect anything less from someone seeking the office of POTUS, regardless of party affiliation.
