How about Emma Watson for Louise? :)

Or Anna Kendrick. Or Emmy Rossum, although her luck with movie musicals hasn't been so great.

Evan Rachel Wood comes to mind as well. Although she pretty much played Louise in Mildred Pierce.

Emmy Rossum has since proven her abilities on Showtime's Shameless. She might be a great Louise. I can see her really digging into the final scene and having a ball.

I honestly don't understand everyone's complaints about Gaga playing Louise from the standpoint of her looks-- that girl is the SPITTING image of the original Gypsy Rose Lee! I don't care a fig how beautiful Natalie Wood might have been in the old movie-- the whole point is that NO-one thinks of Louise as a beauty until she puts on that gown and gloves for the first time. And Gaga looks like the offspring of Streisand-- something I'd value a lot higher than getting a waspy beauty in the part.

Right, but the million dollar question is- can Gaga act?

There's a rumor (JUST a rumor, although the individual who brought it up clams to be an 'insider,' I don't know if there's any truth to that or not) over at the Barbra Streisand Forum, that clams Gaga has already submitted a screen test for the part.

I think if not just for the sake of an insurance policy on such a dicy project, they would want to go with an established actress for the part to go toe to toe with Streisand in the meatier scenes. Updated On: 9/22/14 at 01:19 AM

Honey child, Gaga isn't GYPSY ROSE Lee, she's UG-Lee.

The real Gypsy Rose Lee was 5'8".Gaga is 5'1". She's tiny. Not the right stature for the role.

Aw come on, kid. If us queens can't be catty on a Broadway message board, where CAN we be??

It's funny how certain people you can criticize and no one says a peep. But Gaga is one of those scared... cows, for lack of a better term. Say one word about her and it's all over.

I know the gays are crazy for her but I was never a fan. Her appeal is completely lost on me.

Film is the one medium where a 5'1" girl can look statuesque under the right conditions.

Any google image of the real Gypsy Rose Lee would prove how similar she and Gaga look. (If I wasn't such a ludite I'd have been able to upload 4 or 5 shots in this response already. I need a tutorial please.)

I just think you have crossed the line. It's one thing to not think a person is right for a role, but to savagely attack their looks and call them ugly is pretty childish and disgusting and just completely unnecessary. It doesn't matter who you are talking about, that comment was uncalled for.

@ ljay889: FYI: Natalie Wood was only 5'2" and she successfully played Gypsy Rose Lee.

Exactly. To base the casting of Louise on the real Gypsy Rose Lee's height is pretty weak. Plus, they already are gonna deviate enough from the original by casting a 70-something Rose, I think a shorter Louise is the least of their concerns. If Anna Kendrick wasn't going to star in 3 movie musicals next year, she'd be my top choice. Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain (if they go for a much older choice to match Streisand's older-skewing role) would be fantastic. Lady Gaga is in need of a major career makeover, proving her acting chops would be a good place to start though I really think casting a pop star would be a huge mistake, Louise barely sings, it's an acting role.

@Ray Jennifer Lawrence, at 24, is the youngest person you mentioned, so that would not be skewing toward old. Jessica Chastain would be an inspired choice, she's 37, but I'd be intrigued. Anna Kendrick is 29, and I'm kind of sick of her being cast in everything musical! Jessie Mueller is another person i'd LOVE to see, and at 31, I think she'd be perfect for the role and she could definitely pass as a Barbra's daughter. Lady Gaga, who is 28, I think would also be fantastic, I think she has something in her that she hasn't shown us all just yet.

bwayboy22, that was bad grammar on my part, I meant the "older-skewing" part only about Jessica Chastain. A 37 year old Louise sounds pretty silly, but so does a 70-something year old Rose. In the sake of suspending disbelief, I wouldn't mind seeing Chastain and Streisand duke it out. Kendrick would be cast against type as Louise, and I think she'd blow it out of the park, but she has said repeatedly she is not interested in being in more movie musicals partly so people don't get sick of her singing.

I wanna know whether Streisand is really directing or not. I don't think she's absolutely wrong to direct, but the idea of her starring and directing sounds off, especially since no screen adaptation of the show has had a strong directing vision that allows it to work on camera. I really would love to see an auteur's take on the material, someone surprising like a Steven Soderbergh or a David O. Russell or a Sofia Coppola.

Somehow I can imagine Lady Gaga as Tessie more so than any other character, maybe they could cart three pop starlets for the strippers, Nikki Minaj for Mezeppa. :p

Pop starlets, as the script currently stand (there could of course be rewrites), would be totally wrong for the three strippers. They are in a third-rate burlesque house and there needs to be a world-weariness to them. They need to have been around the block and back again, not in the same age-range as Louise herself. For all its faults, I do think the casting of the strippers in the Middler version (Christine Ebersole, Linda Hart, and Anna McNeely) was spot on.

As I think about it I actually would like to see Catherine Zeta Jones as Mazeppa if this version does indeed come to pass. Maybe Goldie Hawn as Tessie?

Would Zeta-Jones take such a tiny, tiny role in a film that she was once rumored for? Granted her GYPSY would have been with a different team.
