These were two of Bernadette's most memorable performances, but she not nominated for a Tony for either one. Which of the two snubs bothered you more, her performance for 'Into the Woods' or her performance for 'Follies'? If you can't decide, it's okay to say both of them bothered you equally.

She wasn't snubbed for Into The Woods. She chose not to put her name forward. (And Joanna Gleason was so perfect that Bernadette wouldn't have won anyway).

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

She cried too much to win for Follies.

Neither bother me at all.. Neither seems a snub. But if you ask me which performance I thought was better, I'd say Into the Woods.

Which is not to suggest that I don't like Bernadette Peters. I do. Sometimes very much. Sometimes I even love her. But not in either of these two shows.

Neither. Joanna was much better than her in ITW and I thought she wasn't right for the role in Follies. She rightfully won for Song and Dance.

George M.
And the lack of an Oscar nomination for The Longest Yard "I said we only have a few minutes" is equally scandalous.

I really hate the word "snub". It makes it sound like the entire committee AGREED to exclude someone.

I am often disappointed for people that don't get nominated for their work, especially when that work has affected me personally. But I see little point in lamenting over it -- especially years later, I seriously doubt that the actors themselves continue to think about it.

PS...GOTH is 100 percent correct; no "snub" for ITW, she didn't want to be considered. If I the story correctly, she was only going to be in the show a short time, and didn't think considering her would be appropriate. (Of course, with my memory for details, I could be totally making that up.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

^ I just don't see how that's possible. The Tony committee can nominate whoever the hell they want. She was in enough performances and in the show long enough to be considered. I think the main reason Peters missed out on the Tony nom was because Joanna Gleason was bumped to the leading category.

SHE stepped out of contention. They aren't going to nominate someone against their will. THIS WAS HER CHOICE.

To be eligibile for a nom, you simply have to have performed on opening night.

They (the producers) wouldn't have petitioned for Gleeson in Leading if it weren't for Peters dropping out of contention.

How did that work, dramamama? I assume she had to release some sort of public statement so people wouldn't think the nominators just didn't vote for her.

As much as I adored and loved and treasured the revival of Follies. I have to say it was a little bit miscast of BP.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

I would imagine the producers alerted the Tony Nominating Committee, the same way they would petition for changes. (I realize these are two different committees.

"I just don't see how that's possible. The Tony committee can nominate whoever the hell they want. She was in enough performances and in the show long enough to be considered."

Not necessarily. A lot would also depend on when the producers invited the voting members to see the show. The committee could not nominate somebody if the large majority of the voting members were not given the chance to see them in the show. It is very possible that the producers, having already reached an agreement with Bernadette to remove her name from consideration, would hold off on inviting the voters until after she left so as not to have her possibly outshining their other potential nominees.

*Note: I'm not saying this is what happened, but it is a plausible scenario to show how just performing on opening night does not always guarantee eligibility*

"I really hate the word "snub". It makes it sound like the entire committee AGREED to exclude someone. "

I agree with that sentiment, dramamama. The closest thing I think we have had to a true snub in recent Tony history would be the Julie Andrews nomination "snafu" with Victor/Victoria, and even then I would argue it was more a case of an honorary nomination for Julie for returning to Broadway in a rather mediocre at best production, than actively snubbing everything else about that show.

AEA, have you read the book Making It Big? It goes into a bit of detail about the 1996 Tonys (when Big and Victor/Victoria were famously NOT nominated for Best Musical) and Richard Maltby's investigation into how the nominations that year were determined. There was never any official investigation, but the nominating process was changed the following year to limit the amount of discussion before the voting happens and what can be discussed. They also made the committee larger and gave people "term limits" to ensure that there are some new people every year. Only the folks in the room know if there were any true "snubs" that year, but it certainly looks shady.

Back to Bernadette Peters, she's been eligible for a nomination 10 times and has received 7. That's a pretty good track record. And only 5 people so far have ever received MORE than 7 nominations. I would have loved to see her nominated for Into the Woods but when you look at her career overall it's hard to be upset.

Gypsy.

Now I know she wasn't snubbed because she was nominated, but I thought her interpretation of Rose was refreshing, intelligent and honest. Far better than Patti's bulldozing whirlwind.

Bernadette was ok in Follies. But he voice wasn't up to the score.

Vicki Clark SOARED in the role, and allowed Ron Raines to cut loose as well.

"These were two of Bernadette's most memorable performances, but she not nominated for a Tony for either one."

If you experienced and still remember amazing performances, why should it concern you if that actor was awarded for it or not? Would that make your memory different? Their performance? The experience?

If you get to experience moments of beauty in this world, enjoy them, rather than look for ways to enhance, recast, or change them.

Her voice was not up to snuff for Follies. I wish I could have seen Victoria Clark in that role. I didn't see Bernie in George and thought her Mama Rose was meh. But she stole the show at the Sondheim/Marsallis "A Bed and a Chair" last year.

I was so sad they didn't record an album of A Bed and a Chair. From the bits and pieces I have heard they seemed to have found completely fresh takes on Sondheim's songs. The orchestrations sounded lovely.

FOLLIES but in the end I'm over it and I don't care what people say, no one can take her perfect performance of In Buddy's Eyes away from me. She fitted the description of Sally in the libretto perfectly and committed to playing the role exactly as someone who actually does seem crazy and suicidal. I never need to see FOLLIES again.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I was a little disappointed with Bernadette in FOLLIES. I think for that revival, the two people who damn well deserved nominations (Danny Burstein and Jan Maxwell) got them and Ron Raines was an oddly unexpected bonus.
