I listened to the revival of Tell Me On A Sunday on Radio 2 yesterday and it was one of the worst things I've ever heard. I know there are plenty of people who will be fans of the original but I only saw the reworked version (first in London with Denise Van Outen and then with Marti Webb on tour). I much preferred the reworked version and I couldn't believe how badly Marti sounded in this revival. I believe in the revival Unexpected Song was done as an encore so I didn't hear Marti singing it but I always though Denise's version was heartbreaking. I also loved Denise's rendition of the title number especially with her plaintive "please" at the end.

Having read your review of Marti Webb in Tell Me On A Sunday I must admit I approached this latest versión with some trepidation. "One if the worst things I have ever Heard" it definitely isn't" - I would even go so far to say that Marti's performance exceeded any expectations I had. How many singers would be so brave to attempt to emulate a performance that was originated by the same singer nearly 35 years before? Very few I'm sure. It would be interesting to hear Denise van Outen's take on it in 25 years time. I saw Marti do this at the Palace theatre so am obviously biased - the original for me is usually the best. I am not knocking Van Outen's versión - it was just more of a ladette take than Marti's. Anyway back to the reason for my post. It was great to hear Marti's voice again after all these years and considering she is nearly 70 I must say that she still has a lot of strength and quality in her voice. I'm sad I couldn't get to London to see it but I am very grateful to the BBC for broadcasting it and of course to Marti for her excellent performance.
