But, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast were eligible for Best Score.

Best Score pertains to material written FOR the production. The reinstatement of Ashman/Menken's cut songs isn't the same thing. This INCLUDES the extended "Arabian Nights" and "Prince Ali." No other Disney show has used previously written, but cut, material.

Didn't BEAUTY AND THE BEAST use "Human Again," which was originally cut from the film?

That's true, I forgot about that number- but, again, it's only one song.

With the love fest of Aladdin, any chance (slim at best) for Rocky is now gone.

Have a problem nominating a score where most of it has been heard before or only 3 or 4 new songs to augment the original. It unfair to consider a reprise a new song .

To me After Midnight should be in a special show category like Contact should have been.

And I think "The Morning Report" was also originally written for the film version of THE LION KING. Not 100% sure about that though. But your point still stands, Kad.

Let me amend my statement:

No other Disney show has used previously written, but cut, material, to the extent of Aladdin.

Agreed.

Has Prince Ali (reprise) been re-worked for the Broadway production? In Toronto they used the same version that was in the film, with just a single word change from "the end of the earth" to "the end of the road", so it wouldn't have been new in that production. But maybe they have re-worked it for Broadway?

I do think that the new songs are very much worthy of a best score nomination. "A Million Miles Away" is a beautiful song both musically and lyrically, and the other new songs and reprises are clever and sound lovely as well.

I so hope that Gentleman's Guide and After Midnight gets some love at the Tonys. I'm scared these big Blockbuster shows will outshine the art!

I thought the new songs were totally unmemorable- particularly when put next to the Ashman/Menken stuff. I could not hum you "A Million Miles Away" or "Diamond in the Rough" if you put a gun to my head.

Put me in the camp that thinks Aladdin's score will not be eligible.
First and for most there are only 4 songs written soley for the production, "These Palace Walls," "A Million Miles Away," "Diamond in the Rough" and "Somebody's Got Your Back". Then the Sultan's Reprise of "Prince Ali", the Act One Finale, and the Final Ultimo are also credited with lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Even with the reprises that is only 7 out of 17 songs, which is not half. Remember to be eligible a song must be expressly written for the stage adaptation therefore only songs with lyrics by Chad Beguelin will be considered original.
With The Little Mermaid, Menken and Slater wrote 19 additional songs/reprises in addition to the 8 songs written by Ashman and Menken to be deemed eligible for best score.

Even if it were deemed eligible, I think a nomination is unlikely.

@Kad Do you think we will have another year of plays with scores being nominated?

Big Fish
The Bridges of Madison County
First Date
A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder
If/Then
Rocky

I don't think so...yet.

So with the negative reviews for IF/THEN, how does this shake up the race?

Would one think ALADDIN is now more a lock for a nom at this point based on reviews?

At this point I would say:

AFTER MIDNIGHT
GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE
ALADDIN
BEAUTIFUL
(BULLETS - pending reviews, IF/THEN, BIDGES, or ROCKY)

If BULLETS gets positive notices I think it and the 4 above are your 5. Updated On: 3/30/14 at 10:24 PM

I can picture Aladdin or Bridges beat If/Then for the spot. Especially that Aladdin has received much more positive reviews than If/Then.

I'm guessing:

The Bridges of Madison County/Aladdin
Bullets....
A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder
If/Then/Aladdin
Rocky

1. After Midnight
2. Gentleman's Guide
3. Bullets
4. Bridges / Beautiful
5. Strange choice that nobody ever sees coming and leaves us scratching our heads in confusion.

I would love to see Rocky win. If not Rocky, then Bullets. Really didn't care for Gentlemans..., and haven't seen After Midnight.

Is that really how the Tony voters think? "Check on BWW and see what they are saying about this before I cast my vote..."

I'll say:

After Midnight
Beautiful
Bullets Over Broadway
Gentleman's Guide
Aladdin(if there's a 5th spot)

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
