Well, all these unnecessary touches when Bobby could just be gay and in denial (seriously, it's as simple as him seeing a random fellow walk by, and then having a spark, and then singing "Being Alive," finally realizing that trying to go straight and running from what he is won't make it better, and now he's going to have to strike out on his own... I love the idea of the last image of the show being Bobby having the stones to go up to the guy) seem to indicate over-compensating to me. Either he's trying too hard knowing too many changes will fall flat on their face, or someone offered him an absurd amount of money to try something that may not make it out of a reading.

This needed a reply of its own:

My next spark of inspiration is, make the guy who gives him the impetus to finally go out and get what he wants with "Being Alive" a recurring motif throughout the show. He's always just out of Bobby's reach ("down the block on a beach..." I'll stop now), and he wants to talk to him, but is torn between that and the lifestyle his friends think he fits.

"Some years back, Neil Simon was taken sorely to task for rewriting his Odd Couple with female protagonists."

Same when Mary Tyler Moore took over the lead in "Whose Life Is It Anyway?" It just didn't work.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Evans played Bobby as Woody-Allen-with-a-perm in Sheffield - a missed opportunity to step outside of his comfort zone.

Having promoted his casting on this site several years before it happened I was embarrassed by the rather crass production that resulted.

I suspect this production will, too, result in embarrassment.

why cant the #1 composer in our life time of Broadway musicals try what he wants at this stage of his life?...god knows the man is allowed to play with his musicals...and for so many here it seems they only want to be negative rather than at least have a wait-and-see attitude...jeez you broadway queens are really as nasty as it seems...I for one am excited at the prospect of anything Sondheim...i wait and then decide based on what actually makes it to the stage rather than guess beforehand what might make it to the stage..and i do not live in NYC...maybe that allows me more hope...i coined the word SONDHEIMMANIAC for the URBAN DICTIONARY because i have faith that the man himself can do anything...i am proved woring once in awhile but at least i give Sondheim the room to roam before i close the curtain on his work...

Here, here wannabe2! I'm enough of a Sondheim apostle even the songs/shows I don't necessarily like I can't bad mouth. I will say, I've been anxiously awaiting his new work with David Ives for nearly 2 years now and the fact that we haven't heard anything about it since the initial announcement makes me nervous...
