#50What Were They Thinking? The complete journey of Carrie the musical in Lawrence Cohen's new book

The roster of people in hell who "cared enough to try" is a long one, the roster of mediocrities in limbo who "cared enough to try" is even longer.

I saw a regional production of the reboot and it confirmed everything I knew after I saw the original production. It doesn't work. It simply doesn't work. I thought most of what they worked on made act one much better. But act two just awful and unsalvageable.

And I came away thinking what a cynical enterprise it is. "At least they cared enough to try" to get themselves a viable cash cow that is really no better than the quickie, sloppy stage adaptation of Fame that doesn't exist for any reason other than to exploit the title and convince the rubes to spend their cash.

Honestly, is the line, "Carrie, get DOUCHED!" actually in the script or did the actor I heard say that forget what the line was supposed to be?

Anyway, my point is, publishers don't go forward with projects when there is no audience.

I like the grungy opening, "The World According to Chris," and the simple approach to the first act curtain sequence, taken from the film, which was the single best use of the projections in the revisal staging. They added one true clunker to the score, act 2's "Why Not Me?" Maybe I can't stop thinking of the great Charles Busch singing a song with the same title in "Die, Mommie, Die!"

I looooovvvvvved "The World According to Chris" and it gave me such false hopes for the rest of the work they did on the revisal. So quickly dashed by act two.

You're right that Act Two is far less appealing.

Act one has "In", "Carrie", "Open Your Heart", "And Eve Was Weak", "The World According to Chris", "Evening Prayers", "I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance".

Act two has "When There's No One".

I'm happy to clutch the recent cast recording and call it a day.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Has this book been cancelled?

I found a website called experiencecarrie.com and it mentions that the book will be published sometime this year. There's no other info. The site also says that a production of Carrie is opening at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in L.A. on March 12.

The Amazon page doesn't actually exist anymore, it seems. Hence I think it must be cancelled?
