The Purge

Just got back fom watching this. I was curious about the premise when the trailer came out.

It was truly the most nonesensical film I've seen in years. The set up had no logic behind it, the characters and plot development seemed like they were improvised on the spot and the last few moments had the audience laughing out loud in the bad way. Oh, and Ethan Hawke thinks he's Rambo apparently.

Anyone else saw it?

I love horrors and thrillers, I was so excited about this one.

I know, suspension of disbelief. But if they wanted to base a full length movie under this premise, I wish it could have at least made a bit of sense. Just a tiny bit.

The trailer reminded me of one of the old Star Trek episodes where a planet of rather Puritanical inhabitants go crazy once a year as a part of a festival.

The premise sounds like a good idea, for the city of L.A.

I saw it this afternoon. I didn't hate it as much as Blaxx did, but I recognize it's flaws. I think the premise of the "purge" is an interesting idea and certain aspects of the film worked very well. I think it would have been more successful it they would have just gone all out and made a horror film (as the trailers suggest it is) instead of the real slow burning suspense film they ended up with.

That said, the audience erupted in an endless chain of cheers towards the end of the film, some of which I felt like joining in.

Finally saw this film and once I signed on to the fact that the plot was not what I was expecting, I sort of enjoyed it. I thought the premise itself was fascinating, extremely unsettling and ultimately effective. The predictable route would have been to turn it into another Escape From New York outdoor survival flick and while I think that could have made for a fun horror film, I was sort of glad that this did something less predictable.

I saw the sequel today and was extremely impressed with it. It's a much more solid film than the first and this one really takes a look at inequality in America right now. It's a true commentary on the state of the "rich getting richer" here. Like the first one, this isn't a horror film in any way but an excellent suspense film that manages to avoid pretty much any of the cliches that these types of films suffer from.
It's one that I'll definitely buy when it's released.

I saw it today. Much better film then the first one. It does seem like it's a franchise that might try to rush one out every year though.

I was thinking the same thing. I think the idea and the point of "the purge" hit it's high point with the sequel and I can't imagine any further films having something else meaningful to say, so they will probably just become like the SAW films should they continue.

Glad to hear this from you guys. The trailer looked like it was promising to stick closer to the original premise and it does sound as if this films more successfully succeeds in doing so. I look forward to seeing it.

It was much better than the first but the premise is still full of holes. Huge suspension of disbelief is needed to enjoy these.

The Purge starts at a certain time and 2 hours before people are taking walks in the park. The premise would work for me if the Purge was contained to an arena, for example. Otherwise, most people would start killing way before or after and no one would know. Again, all citizens respecting the 24 hours is suspension of disbelief.

You wouldn' t put yourself in the position of your car breaking down then start running in the middle of the street for example.

I totally understand what you're saying but think that even if that world did exist, people would still be getting off of work and needing to do daily things before it starts. We saw the roads beforehand and they were pretty much empty which led me to believe most people were already in a safe place. But as for the people running down the street, they were trying to get a ride and it seemed like a good place to get one.

I dunno. For me, there was nothing really "off" about it. But again, I do see what you're saying.

If it was a real threat, I would see people killing 10 minutes before and then going "Oops, too early? My bad."

Well they have those huge sirens going off letting people know it's started. I just assume that's how people know.

I see your point but maybe the government is keeping an eye on the clock and when the killing starts and ends . Everything was on cameras already anyway so maybe they arrest people who start early or stop late.

Yes, that's what I mean with suspension of disbelief. I just gotta buy that there is an unexplained way the Purge system is not corrupted and respected. I tend to think of logistics a bit too hard.

I did like this sequel. It had a lot of action and kept me interested. I was just sad the rich old b***h didn't get what she deserved.

But so far it's been the best horror (or semi-horror) this year for me. Maybe after Oculus.

I think the next major horror to come out is As Above So Below. Didn't know what to make of it from the trailer.
