Saw a fantastic community theatre production of Avenue Q tonight at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre... just wanted to share that they said "Chick-Fil-A! Is only for now." Got a HUGE response:)!
I think that lyric might be left open in the MTI script. It was originally "George Bush is only for now," but I remember that there was a contest when he left office in 2009 to re-name the lyric (they chose four different lyrics that they alternated until, I believe, they went back to "George Bush was only for now"). When I saw the tour a few years ago, they sang "Glen Beck is only for now," so my best guess is that the licensed script would leave the last "...for now" blank for any modern day issue.
The UK tour has been using "Justin Bieber" which always gets a good laugh, and I have deffinatley heard "Our Show" but can't remember which production I heard that in!
Before you call MTI and the Dramatists Guild, please keep in mind that this particular line is one of two instances in which the authors give their explicit consent to update it and make it the production's own.
When i first saw the Uk tour in 2011 they used "Jedward" then in 2012 they used "Justin Bieber"
Tomorrow is their last show of the tour, hope they use the "our show" line it would bring the house down!
I think its really cool they change the lyric, it keeps the show fresh, the dialogue in the tour also included some references to the city that they where in, such as what was found in the hat after The Money Song ( a reference to the rival football clubs ticket being worthless)

That is funny and topical. I saw it on Broadway and they used "George Bush". The only problem I have is they only poke fun at certain political types and would never dare insert "Obama" into that line because it is not PC - IMO.
I'm in a Production in NJ opening Thursday! Our director is in the Avenue Q Company off-broadway and he also toured with the 2nd nation tour of Avenue Q. And we use Fox News is only for now.
bess888- while people may laugh the actual line does not make sense since FOX News wins in the ratings war compared to the other networks. Actually, a network like CNN is probably more like to be "for now" - lol
I'm not a Republican (they disgust me), but I was disappointed when the NY production didn't just replace "Bush" with "Obama." That option made by far the most sense to me.
(EDIT: I realize "Obama" wouldn't scan, but "Barack" wouldn't be bad. "B.O." would be interesting, too. :))

Sorry yankeefan7, but the truth will outlast made up bullsh*t. Hence, CNN will be around longer than Fox News. Enough of this political stuff though. What else scans well?
- Healthcare (huge response, especially after the Supreme Court ruling) - Tom Cruise (right after the divorce) - Glenn Beck - This heat (during the heatwave) - Our show (closing night)
However, Chick-fil-A got by far the biggest laugh and some people even stood up for that line in particular.
