I want to buy tickets for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, however I only want to go a night that Daniel Radcliffe is preforming. I know that sometimes the understudy takes the role, so I was wondering if there was anyway to know when Daniel is actually going to be in the play so I get the right tickets? I know that he might get sick or injured the day of, but I don't even know how often he preforms regardless. Like does anyone know if he is in every performance? Are there certain days/times he takes off?
As far as I know, he has never missed a performance. He performs 8 shows a week. You will be very unlucky if you don't see him perform.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Daniel said in an interview that he's going to try not to miss a show (same with John Larroquette), and like the above poster, he hasn't missed a show yet! :) Updated On: 10/19/11 at 09:42 PM
The only time he would have had to miss was when the new Harry Potter movie was premiering the first two weeks of this past July. The producers essentially acknowledged that Radcliffe's the reason for the show as performances when Radcliffe had to be out were canceled. I can almost guarantee you Radcliffe will be performing.
Scratch and claw for every day you're worth!
Make them drag you screaming from life, keep dreaming
You'll live forever here on earth.
When they are charging those prices and promising that star I don't think you should settle for an understudy. I would have happily seen HOW TO SUCCEED with an unknown if that was the way the revival was mounted but I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to see Daniel Radcliffe in HOW TO SUCCEED" when they are advertising it as DANIEL RADCLIFFE in HOW TO SUCCEED... :P.
Same with other shows that have stars at their core..e.g. GYPSY. I'm sure I would enjoy the show in a regional context without a star but if it is PATTI LUPONE GYPSY I want to see Patti LuPone!!!

I just wish that there wasn't still this notion that star leads will skip performances on a regular basis/schedule. Can anyone remember any time in recent memory, aside from the alternate Tonys in WSS (arguably not "stars"), that it happened? I honestly can't.
"Hey little girls, look at all the men in shiny shirts and no wives!" - Jackie Hoffman, Xanadu, 19 Feb 2008
Katie Rose Clarke missed a lot of performances in wicked. I saw it with her understudy and was very impressed but I later learned that she takes off many matinees. It's a valid question because some people do take days off
"What a shame that people feel that they can only enjoy a Pulitzer and Tony award winning show with a Frank Loesser score if there's a star in it."
Objection!
Assuming facts not in evidence.
Ox never said he/she could only enjoy the show with Radcliffe. Rather that he/she only wanted to see it with Radcliffe.
They are two very different things.
For example, I am sure I would "enjoy" Anything Goes with Sutton Foster, Stephanie Block, Tari Kelly, or even Bernie Madoff as Reno, but I might want to know which of them is going to be appearing before deciding to see it (in my case again) before actually getting tickets.
