A little off topic question, but anybody know how old Bryan West (Kyle Dean Massey's Ex) is?

I like them individually for the roles, but I imagine something will feel off when Pippin is visibly older than the Leading Player. Seeing their pictures next to each other, it's strange to picture Ciara helping the young Kyle Dean find himself.

Awesome Danny: I couldn't agree more. I'm sure they're both great, but something is off.

I also feel like Kyle Dean is dragged out to replace every youngish white American role. Is this the only guy who can fill all these shoes after the originals have bowed out? I think his casting is a bit uninspired.

I am very excited for Ciara though. She seems to be a perfect fit.

Isn't he a tad too old and feminine to play Pippin?

Sorry, I'm late to this thread, I was busy fantasizing about my maid.

Gotta say, hats off to the Pippin producers for not stunt casting these roles. Glad they're going to theatre performers with chops. Hopefully the show's reputation and the stunt casting in smaller roles will keep it running for another year.

I'm not the least bit familiar with Kyle or Ciara -- any YT clips of their performances fans would recommend? (Preferably not in Wicked or Next to Normal, but I'll take what you've got) And, yes, I know how to do a YT search--just thought fans of theirs may have specific clips to recommend.

As for Charlotte and Terence, I remember seeing an interview with them stating that usually when one of them's working, the other is off to take care of the kid(s), but I guess this particular opportunity allowed them enough balance. I hope they're not a package deal. I would LOVE to see Charlotte one last time--she was one of the absolute highlight for me. Couldn't take my eyes off her when she danced. Terrence, no doubt talented, seemed distracted and disinterested and spoke/sang his lines so quickly that he seemed to be in a rush to get out of there--this was back in November.

Do we know how long Annie Potts is contracted for?

HorseTears, I had never heard of Ciara Renee until today, but the youtube video of her singing "The Man That Got Away" at 54 Below really won me over.

Yeah, that was a pleasant if in rather indistinct reading of "The Man Who Got Away". Also saw her video from something called 'Women of Manhattan' in which she's delivering a comedic monologue of sorts. The video's from 2013, so it's not some old random college production or something. Her delivery's rather rushed and her comedic timing is off. She also reads really young.

She must have really nailed the Pippin audition. Oh, well, I'll wait to see her in the show. They got the casting right the first time round, I'll put faith in them for the second round as well.

TheatreNut: NO. Kyle Dean Massey will be fine in the role. After all, the powers that be know what they're doing if they cast him.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I think that the concern that Massey might seem too old for the part, particularly opposite a younger Leading Player, is legit, but I don't know where the "too feminine" thing comes from. I saw him in Next to Normal and didn't get that sense at all.

And it may seem that Massey's everywhere, but he's only been in 3 Broadway shows - ensemble in Xanadu, Gabe in Next to Normal, and Fiyero in Wicked. I think he was a replacement in all 3.

"What was the name of that cheese that I like?" "you can't run away forever...but there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start" "well I hope and I pray, that maybe someday, you'll walk in the room with my heart"

If people will buy him as a high schooler in Next to Normal ( I didn't, but I guess other people did), then I think he'll be fine here. He has a great voice. And it's not like the part needs any sort of deep, emotional acting. Leading Player is def. a harder part to pull off.

Right, if the powers picked him, he MUST be good. Really? LOL.

I dunno, I approached this production with great anticipation about seeing a new leading player, but not really giving a fig about whatever pretty boy was going to be playing Pippin. I left the production hugely impressed by Patina, of course, but absolutely dazzled by Matthew James Thomas who managed to make a role that has often seemed one dimensional and dull to me instead funny, thrilling and even soulful. I'm not denying that the Leading Player is a beast of a role for even the most talented triple threat, but if you are a true triple threat with charisma to burn you're almost guaranteed to fly with that role. With the title role of Pippin, I think the success is much more dependent upon the qualities of the actor.

I mean, GUESS I understand the too old comments, althoug I just saw him in wicked and damn he's stupid hot, but I really disagree with the too feminine comment. I mean there's nothing wrong with being feminine, lord knows I've my queenie moments but I think there may have been a better way to phrase that so it doesn't sound like a slam regarding his sexuality. Not to mention he's been playing male romantic leads for his whole career so I'm not surprised he's continuing to do so. I always thought he would make a good Brian, when he gets a bit older, if they ever musicalized Queer as Folk lol

I don't think KDM reads too old on stage-I was surprised when I found out how old he was after seeing N2N. He also has a really great voice (shown off in N2N, not so much in Wicked)that could continue the path of Matthew James Thomas' vocals. And I agree that I am glad the producers didn't go for stunt casting.

Kyle Dean Massey does not look or "read" too old to play "Pippin". He's 32 and looks younger. He'll be fine. I don't get everyone's concern.

Ciara Renee on the other hand looks really, really young to be the "Leading Player" and that's where the balance between "Pippin" and "Leading Player" is being thrown off.

I want to see them in costume and makeup. Maybe that will make a difference.
