For the record, I'm not crazy about the Gallagher choice.
I like him, he's always been fine but never spectacular (imo).
But I was hoping for someone a little more dynamic.
Cheno of course is perfect for this.
I can't wait to see who they cast as Primrose. I guess Andrea Martin is out.
ETA: I would love to see Michael Blakemore direct this. He "gets" the style and pacing this show needs to work.

"I can't imagine how much it cost to mount the original production."
I remember reading at the time that it was capitalized at around $995,000 and ultimately ended up costing over $1,000,000, an astronomical figure for 1978.
And yes, as has been pointed out, the physical production was extraordinarily beautiful, and perhaps overshadowed the material. Which, as others have pointed out, is also extraordinary, one of the best written musicals of the 70s.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I was going to say, if this is true (and I hope it is), where will it play? Everything seems booked for the fall (unless something closes after the summer and Tony Awards)

Joanne Worley was pretty swell as Primrose in the Actors' Fund production back in 2005. Georgia Engel would be fun too. Or Jackie Hoffman!

Carol Burnett! Wow! What a brilliant choice. I have no doubt that it would sell out for the entirety of her run. Joanne Worley or Jackie Hoffman are also great choices, but perhaps with a slightly less box office appeal. But, wow! Carol Burnett, what a great casting choice.
I still vote for spectacular production values. If not, I assure you, it will be compared negatively to the original production.

Good choices on Mrs. Primrose. Would love to see Tammy Grimes. Andrea Martin would be a hoot.
My question is does Gallagher really have that strong a singing voice? A while back on that "other board" (and before Jackman mentioned doing "The River") I posted that I'd love to see him in a revival of "On The Twentieth Century". People then posted that Cullum had voice problems in the original production due to the singing demands of the role and doubted Hugh was up to the task. So if true I wonder how Gallagher will fare. Is it really that difficult to sing? The night I saw Cullum his voice sounded fine. Only other time I saw the show, Jaffe was played by Rock Hudson and the less said on that one the better.

Posted: 2/13/14 at 5:06pmIf I remember correctly, I saw On the 20th Century, three times. All three times, with John Cullum. He was in great voice all three times. I never heard that he struggled with the demands of the role.

I too have always wanted to see Carol Burnett take on the Coca role, but I doubt she'd commit to 8 shows a week. The person who should be playing Oscar Jaffe is Kevin Kline. Now, THAT would be a casting coup.

10-12 seasons ago there was a production at the Shaw Festival that differed from the Broadway production in a couple of major ways.
It was acoustic. The theatre it was playing in was a 325 seat proscenium house and they didn't need any amplification.
The other was that the scenic elements were cut way down. The stage was/is much smaller than any Broadway house, and there wasn't room for some elaborate production. But by taking away that "wow" factor, the show played better as a show and not a great big musical.
With the right director (something Roundabout doesn't always do well) and design team On The 20th Century could work cut down. It does not have to be a spectacle.

Like a few others I'm not completely sold on Gallagher but I don't his body of work to well, nor his capabilities in a show like this one. Either way I'm glad this show is finally being done again.
