"Buckley could probably put her cabaret spin on some of the Ebersole songs, but at no point could she ever sing the songs as written, and especially not at this stage in her career. "

No doubt Betty will connect with Big Edie's line "I've got to get my voice back exactly the way it was when I was 45."

I went to see York in Anything Goes at the Ahmanson. Went to see her, but saw her understudy instead who gave the worst performance I've ever seen (other than Christy Brinkley in Chicago)

I love Betty but I just can't see it.

Great news! I really hope this will end up on Broadway, Betty deserves another great role in New York.

One would hope this makes it back to Broadway with Buckley, York and McGillin.

Hi! If this could help, this is my write up from when it was in Sag Harbor this past summer. I cover the Long Island area for BWW. It was a great production! Happy to hear it is continuing!

The leading ladies were great; the whole cast was pretty good. But that production was community theatre level. I'm not referring to the amount of money onstage or the size of it, I thought the direction and use of the space was downright incompetent.

I think it's a fantastic show, but given that the Best Musical winner of that year is currently failing in revival form, why would a revival of Grey Gardens which flopped the first time be any different?

^Both Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening can be pretty hard sells to the general public. Maybe they could advertise it as Betty Buckley's first appearance in almost twenty years.

That would sell all of 100 tickets.

GREY GARDENS is one of my all-time favorite shows and the very first musical I saw on Broadway. I was a bit cool on it at first, especially that first act, but I've grown so fond of the cast recording and my memories of seeing Ebersole, Wilson, Davie, Cavenaugh and the rest of the cast's beautiful work. If the show is revived, I hope it's the right production with a can't-miss turn by the person in the Big Edie/Little Edie track. It'd be terribly misguided to mount a production around York and Buckley only really appears in a significant way in Act II. York's performance is okay enough, but she focuses on Little Edie as an eccentric without getting at the endearing, humorous, desperate and vulnerable combination of emotions that made Ebersole's take on the role so transcendent. The fact that Buckley's take on "Jerry Likes My Corn" is definitive doesn't mean the show should be on Broadway, unfortunately, not without a leading lady that can match Buckley's note-perfect and thoroughly unique take on Big Edie.

In what world is Buckley's "Jerry Likes My Corn" definitive?

Here's what the New York Times had to say about Buckley's turn as Big Edie:

Ms. Buckley goes her own way with the elderly Edith, who seems somehow untouched by the surrounding filth. Her long gray hair is wonderfully fluffy (the wigs are by Paul Huntley), and her offbeat outfits (by Ilona Somogyi) so vividly colored that they could star in a detergent commercial. Her cane and halting walk notwithstanding, she radiates vitality.

It’s perfectly clear why Jerry (a delightfully sweet Mr. Doyle), the handsome young man who helps out around the house, would enjoy Edith’s company. When she cooks corn on the cob in her squalid bedroom, he is brave and kind enough to eat it, and that means the world to her.

This is the moment when Ms. Buckley does something hauntingly powerful, turning the song “Jerry Likes My Corn” into a devastating tear-jerker, reminiscent of Stephen Sondheim’s “In Buddy’s Eyes.” It is masterly, and it is why you will emerge from the theater shaken but grateful, wishing only that there were more of Ms. Buckley in the show.

It's going to take a lot more than a quote from the Times to replace Mary Louise Wilson's Tony-winning turn as Big Edie. She was perfection and her performance lives on forever in the Broadway and Off-Broadway recordings.

I wish you could see how far back I'm rolling my eyes at your comment. Mary Louise Wilson was indeed perfect as Big Edie. My point was that unlike York, Buckley's take on the role is completely different from her Broadway counterpart yet incredibly moving and effective. It is possible for two great actresses to be brilliant in the same role, but it already sounds like you've made up your mind so why bother?

Maybe you should roll your eyes forward and find a dictionary so you can look up what definitive means.
