Add me to the list of people who went in with terribly low expectations, and wound up enjoying it for what it was. It definitely is not high art and probably won't be remembered past this run, but there were (for me) genuine laughs throughout this silly, paper-thin story. The cast sells the hell out of it and at the end of the day, was better than a lot of the dreck trying to be high art that I've seen.
Josh Grisetti stole the show for me. And now I want to see Chip Zien and Mark Linn-Baker play brothers in some show somewhere.

Saw it on Monday. Great cast, great music, but....the story line is not just paper-thin or silly, it's downright stupid - as in cringe-worthy and an insult to the audience's intelligence. What a waste of a great score, witty lyrics and what a waste of a very talented cast. How on Earth did they find investors to finance this ? Don't they read the story before plunking down the money ?

Posted: 3/25/15 at 1:23pmI actually kind of agree with Phillypinto on this one. You never know what the critics are going to enjoy. I personally wouldn't call BoM or Gentleman's Guide silly fluff. But I do think that Kinky Boots, Newsies, Aladdin (to some extent), and Honeymoon all were, and seem to recall they were all well-reviewed. I thought for sure Brantley would pan Honeymoon, but he really enjoyed it. You never really know for sure.

Posted: 3/25/15 at 2:32pmTo those saying that whether you like "Honeymoon" is an indication as to whether or not you'll like this, I have to disagree (at least, in my case). I really didn't enjoy "Honeymoon," but once "ISBY" reached its twist (which did take a little long), it became much more engaging. Plus, I think the comedy and writing in "ISBY" was just better. Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris, and Lisa Howard all really shine. I went in with really low expectations, but "ISBY" had some really great comedic moments, and didn't leave me wanting the finale to hurry up and happen.

Thanks for setting the bar here so low - the cast definitely surpassed it last night. The work itself is trite, and really would have been better as a 30 minute sitcom pilot vs. a 105 minute musical, because all the songs were throwaways.
Kudos to Tyne, Harriet, and Lisa for making the most of what they've been given to work with.

Posted: 3/27/15 at 11:41pmI was very pleasantly surprised by this one. I went in not expecting much, but my friend and I laughed throughout the whole thing. I had read about the plot twist, so I thought I was spoiled, but it turns out I didn't know the half of it! Tyne Daly did her usual disapproving mother who eventually comes around, but it's so much fun to watch. Everyone had great lines. The music won't win any awards, but it was definitely serviceable. The book I thought was solid. I know the show didn't get well reviewed in New Jersey, but maybe the creators have been working on it since then. It's worth seeing!

Just returned from seeing it tonight. Had dinner first at Tricolori(right next to theater). On the way in, we saw JPH coming out . He was friendly to one and all
The show was very enjoyable. Will it win many Tonys ? No. The score is serviceable. The story is ok. Lots of Jewish jokes. The material is helped immensely by the actors especially Tyne Daly & Harriet Harris.In all probability, the critics will savage it. In its defense, the audience loved it and they were quite enthusiastic over it.
Glad we saw it and we do recommend it.

Posted: 3/28/15 at 3:43pmAdd me to the list of pleasantly surprised. I saw it earlier in the week and I had a lot of fun. The pace reminded me, not surprisingly, of an episode of Frasier, just siller. The cast was hilarious, the songs clever for what they were, and lot of dumb but hilarious jokes. I will say the ballads are an issue, especially the big "message" one Sierra Boggess does. It ain't no Make Them Hear You, and it was endless. Is it memorable? Not really. But it leaves you on a high, giggling remembering some bits on the way home, and I'm fine with theatre that truly serves just that purpose.

Last night I was having dinner with two friends who hated it and were questioning my taste, just as another friend texted me to say he'd just left the theatre and that it was fantastic. It's that kind of show!
