Phyllis, I was just about to post about that. I can't really undestamd him. I'm pretty sure he's gay but he keeps getting caught up in these weird, homophobic arguments... I'll still enjoy his writing though...

He is gay. He just also has mad contempt for gay people.

Lord, he's as confusing as the meanings behind his books are...

Truly is a shame, though. He's one of my favorite authors...

^There's a bit of truth to that though. I'm surprised at the number of times guys have asked me on grindr if I'd bb for them. Every time the answer is no, and I then wonder how many times the guy has asked others, and how many times the answer has been "yes."

But losers who try to get strangers to bareback with them do not mean most of them/us probably have AIDS.

People who don't practice safe sex are a problem for sure, but that doesn't mean it's everyone, and nor does it mean that's a problem that's only the gay community's. The amount of women who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy would seem to speak otherwise. Granted, an unwanted pregnancy is easier to fix than an unwanted fatal/chronic STD, but still.

I guess he could also be agreeing that gay men are the horniest, but isn't that just (to blanketly generalize) men in general?

Mostly, I just think Bret Easton Ellis is a tool.

He's just not relevant anymore. The whole disaffected, emotionally barren prose style is last decade. Jay McInerny at least knew when to stop.

Chuck Palahniuk is the go to guy for post modern nihilism these days.

And I didn't know Ellis had copped to being gay. I remember him being coy and changing answers depending on who he was talking to.

But in the end, I'm with Phyllis. He is a douche.

You do not even want to know what Bret Easton Ellis wrote about the whole Tyler Clementi hearing or just his feelings about bullying in general.

He may have copped to being gay but he still talks about the threesomes that included female partners from the 80s in his tweets.

I love Chuck's work. Mostly because it snuck into being the favorite of so many frat bros I know who seem to not really get it besides them thinking Fight Club was 'cool' and how it never occurred to the subtext in his works is possibly coming from a gay point of view or something that seemed to be critical of what they celebrated with Fight Club. Chuck does not really indulge. I remember his afterword about him hearing so many interpretations of his work and he is just, 'Whatever.'

Let me preface this by saying Paris is a moron, but in her defense if every off the cuff, sometimes insensitive or ill-informed rambling I had ever made was audio taped and broadcast to the world, I would also appear like a hateful shrew.

I actually thinks she likes the gay community and she was talking to a gay friend so who really knows.

I think it was a slow newsday and sometimes I hate the world we live in with all this technology. I liked when we had movie stars and public figures with an air of glamour and mystique, before we saw their sex organs and every one of their interactions was filmed.

I guess he really IS a douche bag... Never really wanted to think that... Whatever, I'll still read his books any way . (Now, if Stephen King said something like this, I would more than likely be on the floor sobbing screaming "HOW CAN YOU DO THIS?!?!?", as he is my favorite author).

As for Paris, I don't think she really understands that the things she says can hurt people. I think she's probably extremely self centered and doesn't realize how hateful the things she says are... Come to think of it, what exactly IS she famous for doing?

(I've never read a Palahniuk book but I've always wanted to. Any ideas on which one to start with?)

The question should really be:

WHO exactly is she famous for doing?

CJ, I would recommend Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk.

It's one of his earlier novels, but it's also one of his best.

But be careful to get the right one. He just did something odd and re-released a new version called "Invisible Monsters Remix" which is apparently the same book but all the chapters are out of order.
I'm not quite sure what the point of the "remix" gimmick is, but one of the great pleasures of the original is the impact of a twist at the end which adds an entirely new level to the material.

Also good:

Survivor
Lullaby

and of course Fight Club

The only one I would say don't get is Pygmy. It's written in Pidgin English and I just couldn't get through it.

Easton Ellis' twitter is actually something of a guilty pleasure for me to read, I am embarassed to admit. Not that I read half of what he writes (he goes through endless, stupid rants), but... I've gone back and forth on his writing--as a teen I loved Less Than Zero in particular, and much more recently I did really like Lunar Park, though I get why others didn't. Others, like Glamorama, I think are almost unreadable (in that case I thought the biggest problem was the seeming lack of any editor). Jay McInerney will always be mentioned along with Ellis--for several reasons including their connection and Ellis bragging about some sort of 3 way with him that McInerney amusingly says never happened--but around the time Glamorama came out, I read his Model Behaviour which has many similar themes--but was a short, quick, fun read. I'm not sure if Ellis has officially come out as anything but bi, but I think it's pretty much been implied at this time that he's what most people would define as gay. Score one for the gays! Meh.

As for Chuck Palahniuk, I admit I always found him a bit overated until a couple of years back when I went to an interview and reading by him with a class I was TAing (the class was reading Fight Club), and he did really impress me with his thoughts. Yeah he likes to play up things like the claims that people pass out left and right when he reads his now infamous jerking off/disembowling short story, but I know he also has a reputation for helping out the careers of a ton of up and coming writers, responding to requests for criticsm of work, etc. So I guess it's a personal reaction, but he seemed like a nice guy. As Strummer mentioned, I also always find it amusing when I see Fight Club taught in class (and it seems to be taught in a lot of classes, I guess bcause it can be applied to so many different subjects across the English Lit/Pop Culture spectrum)--everyone, and yes I mainly mean the guys, gets excited about it more than most titles, but many seem surprised when issues like a homoerotic reading, or even the mention that Chuck is gay, come up (though the reaction ultimately has always been positive, with some interesting discussion--I've yet to see any stereotypical young straight guy freak out by it).

As for Paris Hilton... As has been said, she's an idiot, and said stupid and hurtful things (what's new). However, while I don't think it gives her a free pass, I do kinda agree with Bettyboy to an extent. She was talking,m fairly flippantly, about a subject that is actually very serious, and had no idea she was being recorded. It's not something that makes me proud, but I've been at parties where (gay) friends for example make some stupid AIDS joke that they would never say or even find funny if they had been sober, or in a different venue or being recorded. It doesn't excuse what she says, but a part of me does kinda just shrug it off as just another stupid comment.
