"The film version of the Broadway musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the original John Waters film, was such a hit that New Line Cinema has asked John Waters to pen a sequel to the movie musical.

Variety reports that the project will reunite Waters with Adam Shankman, who directed and choreographed the film; producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan; and Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Shaiman and Wittman will write new songs for the sequel."

Would it be with the same cast? It could be cute.

Oh dear. Number one rule when thinking about writing a sequel: Don't make a sequel when the problem is already solved with a happy endng.

The one thing they may have going for them is that the early 60s had MANY problems.

The fact that it has Michelle and John and they were exasperated during both grease's one and two maybe being together for both movies could make them both a success

I have it!! Velma goes insane kills Tracy while holding Edna hostage. She takes her the top floor of the Chrysler Tower. The rest of the cast dances on the roof, with the main actors from the movie rappel down and do a dance on the ropes. They kick in windows, and challenge Velma to a dance off. Mario Lopez comes from nowhere to host, They out dance Velma throwing her into a coma. Happily ever after. The Chrysler Tower is played Robert DeNiro in a fat suit.

Ok I'm really concerned about this. What would be the subject matter? Tracy in college? Velma's revenge?

I can't deside if I'm excited or afraid for this...
At least Marc's involved!

1) I am elated that New Line Cinema has approached a creative team to write an original movie musical.

2) I am worried and saddened that they want it to be a sequel.

3) Everything came to a resolve at the end of the film. If Waters wanted to continue the story, he had DECADES to do so. New Line Cinema wants to make more money, so the obvious way to do so is bank on an already successful project. This is nothing new -- except this is the first time I can remember since GREASE when a creative team has been approached for a movie musical sequel. (Now in GREASE 2 they found a good way to continue the story -- have mostly brand new characters. But HAIRSPRAY without Tracy, Penny, Edna, Link, Maybelle or Seaweed? I dunno 'bout that).

4) Of course it's very possible that a good film/story can come from this. I just hate the intentions behind the desire.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I would say NO to a sequel because they rarely are as good as the original. But Marc is involved, so I have good faith.

Marc, Shankman, Waters, Neil, and Craig are all involved. If they get the entire cast back, I can't NOT be excited.

I mean, I'd love to hear what Marc could come up with.

Yes very much so.

I think it could work with the WHOLE cast coming back and adding some new allstars.
