This is why I prefer live theater above all other art forms. THE COAST OF UTOPIA, all twelve glorious hours of it, was one of the most thrilling theatrical events I've ever witnessed in over 30 years of theater-going - a true masterpiece where all the pieces come together into one seamless, enthralling whole. Everything about it, from the design, to the performances, to the direction and of course the writing, is exceptional, and it all adds up to one exhilarating experience that should not be missed by anyone who really cares about theater and the ideas and emotions it can inspire.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
Actually, no. It was a breeze because I was so involved in the plays, and they are staged so brilliantly that the time just flies.
I also want to add that today was a starf***er's paradise. Meryl Streep, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Tony Roberts, Penny Fuller, & Clare Danes were all in the audience. There were probably more than that, but they are the ones I saw.

Was it easy to follow with all the characters and plot all at once with no time to reflect? I found that reading the playbill and program (and a little online) added to my appreciation and understanding of the show.

I thought it was remarkably clear throughout, and I was able to follow who everybody was without any difficulty whatsoever, mainly because the writing, direction and performances are so specific and clearly delineated. I never really thought about there not being any time to reflect because it just worked so well as a whole. And little details that may have been forgotten with a time lapse between seeing the individual productions were clearer because everything was fresh in my mind.

I agree! Amazing, one of the best days in my life. All te actors were spot on and they seemed guinely thrilled at the curtain call. D2- didn't you love Jennifer Ehle at curtain call?
She and Martha Plimpton were laughing hysterically throughout the curtain call tonight. Plimpton also tripped on the hem of her dress as she ran off.

JB, were you there today as well, or were you at another marathon?
It was my impression that nothing was dropped randomly - that whatever fell to the floor was done with a purpose, even though it may have seemed accidental.

It sucks that I have to wait another three weeks until I can see the play in it entirity. Actually the time in between hasn't been too bad because I've been able to think about it. Last week in my feminism and post-communism class we were discussing Russia's past and it's various dissention movements and dorky me raised my hand and brought up Coast of Utopia as an interesting look at one of those movements. I felt all theatre nerdy, because as soon as the topic came up, I thought about what I had seen the night before and I got kind of excited. Updated On: 3/25/07 at 01:31 AM
Oh, yeah I was there today. I have only seen Play 1 and 2 before and in the first play when a twig like object fell form the ceiling when it was supposed to be a leaf in the last scene of Act 1, that was unintentional. And when the book fell form the chair in the second play, I’m pretty sure that was unintentional too. But, in the third there was only a piece of paper that fell, I don't know if that was meant to happen.

Just wondered - I was further back, also center. But if you had been upstairs, I was going to ask if the painting in Maria Ogarev's Studio blocked the view.

So I randomly got free tickets to Part 2.. and I loved it.. I didn't see Part 1.. so I had to get caught up a bit by my friend who came with me who had seen it.. now we're going to 3 on tuesdsay.. not sure I could of sat thru ALL of them in one day!.. I would need a rousing tap number to get me thru..
I wasn't excited about Billy Crudups acting in Part 2.. it was a little put apon I thought.. but everyone else was great.
I'm always amazed by these marathons, and I've often wondered if the actors find them easier to perform (since they dont have to think about "Okay, which play is it tonight?") or harder (since they're doing all three in sequence). But they're surely a testament to the performing arts.
Allvocal: What's so hard about doing it all in one day? All you have to do is sit there.
As for the performers, it's a long day for them too but the energy built from one performance to the next and it all appeared effortless. It was just as exhilarating at 10 last night as it had been at noon. And as JB noted, at the curtain call they were all as genuinely thrilled as the audience was. For once, the standing ovation was warranted, genuine, and instantaneous.

I'm so happy to hear that marathon curtain calls are more enthusiastic than those of the individual showings. Every time I go to one, only about twenty people or so stand. :P (I'm always one of them) Great to hear you had such an amazing time!
