What does What produce, and if it's the best, how come I've never heard of it?

I love the Laura Pels Theatre. And the New World Stages are very comfortable.  I think I might have missed the point of your question. lol

I don't think anyone can give a meaningful answer to that question. First, it's not clear if you mean commercial or nonprofit and the considerations are entirely different. I'll assume you mean nonprofit, although then one has to wonder what you meant by getting producers. Second, these things tend to go in random cycles. One year one theatre may seem to be hitting on all cylinders, and the next year the come up empty. Third, it depends what type of show you are looking for. Right now it would be hard to say anyone could compete with the Public. But who knows what will be best next season. That's why we have awards every season.

I would say Playwrights Horizon, The Public, Classic Stage Company, Signature Theatre, Second Stage. I have always enjoyed The Irish Rep too.

Then there are the theatres in Brooklyn... BAM... Theatre for A New Audience, St Ann's Warehouse

Just my opinion.

You also have to take into account the non-profits, the commercial venues, the residency programs, the houses strictly from third party bookings, the companies that produce their own season, the company that produces a season at all…. there are so many factors… this isn't an answerable question. If you're looking for an opinion, sure. But factually, nope.
