‘In reality, this Lohengrin is an utterly new phenomenon for the modern consciousness!’ Richard Wagner himself understood the innovative nature of this, his sixth work of musical theatre, which he completed in 1848, the year of revolutions. Although it is usually counted among his ‘romantic operas’, this work already made clear his new vision of musical drama. In his opera, the mediaeval saga of the Swan Knight, the son of Parsifal, becomes a contemplation of the true love that asks no questions. Lothar Koenigs offers an in-depth reading of the music, while Olivier Py, already known at La Monnaie for his brilliant versions of Les Huguenots and Hamlet, will certainly not smooth away Wagner’s revolutionary political side. Wagner himself believed that ‘only those who are able to free themselves from any modern-looking, generalising form of representation and thus see the phenomena of real life are able to understand Lohengrin.’ A challenge to us all, surely?
