Whether it be Rameau or Poulenc, the French soprano Annick Massis knows the French repertoire through and through, but has a pronounced penchant for the Romantic era. However, her talent is displayed equally in Italian bel canto, including the great colo- ratura roles in the work of Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini. After appearing on our stage in Verdi’s Macbeth in September, in this recital Annick Massis gives us an opportunity to appreciate her exceptional knowledge and love of Italian music: from Vivaldi through pure bel canto to the great masters of the late 19th century such as Puccini, as well as the less familiar Catalani. ‘For every character and every mood, italian song always finds the right expressive means’ – we can expect Annick Massis’s programme to fully confirm those words of Rousseau’s.
