Variety reports that on Halloween this year, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures held a private reading of a new musical adaptation of the film DAVE.

Featuring music by NEXT TO NORMAL's Tom Kitt, lyrics by LEGALLY BLONDE's Nell Benjamin and book by ANNIE's Thomas Meehan, DAVE is aiming to premiere onstage late next year.

Warner Bros. division head Mark Kaufman attended the reading and said: "As first readings go, it was an extremely strong start. There's still work to be done, but it sings. It's like a traditional musical comedy."

DAVE is based on Ivan Reitman's 1993 comedy, starring Kevin Kline as a man hired to impersonate the president after the real POTUS goes into a coma. Also in the cast were Sigourney Weaver, Frank Langella, Kevin Dunn, Ben Kingsley, Faith Prince, Laura Linney and more. Screenwriter Gary Ross also attended the reading last month.

The team is planning for another reading in February, with an out-of-town tryout to follow.
