What has thus far been a relatively quiet summer on the stage heats up this month thanks to a national tour and a local take on a Broadway hit.

The national tour of the hit musical Jersey Boys makes its' second stop in Des Moines from July 24 - August 4th. The musical retelling of the formation and success of the pop group The Four Seasons won the 2006 Tony Award for best musical and has been riding high ever since. Jersey Boys has a leg up on other jukebox musicals because the use of the pop songs is born out of the account of the origin of the songs themselves. Jersey Boys played to packed houses the last time it stopped in Des Moines and it will surely draw returning visitors and new theatergoers alike. The Des Moines Playhouse has a great family offering this month with Legally Blonde The Musical. Based on the hit film about a sorority girl determined to get into Harvard Law School, the musical enjoyed a run on Broadway in 2007 and a subsequent national tour. Because of the comedy slant and name recognition, this bubblegum musical is ripe for local interpretation and will no doubt draw a crowd. Legally Blonde The Musical opens on July 12th and runs through August 4th. For ticket information visit Des Moines Community Playhouse.

Whether you want a trip back in time or a family-friendly hit, Jersey Boys and Legally Blonde will satisfy your desire for a fun story and catchy tunes.
