Deadline reports that theater veteran and Tony nominee Tony Shalhoub has been cast in the lead role opposite Rachel Brosnahan in Amy Sherman-Palladino's Amazon drama pilot THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL.

Set in decade of the 1950s, the project will follow, "Miriam 'Midge' Maisel (Brosnahan), who had her life mapped out for herself-go to college, find a husband, have 2.5 kids and throw the best Yom Kippur dinners in her elegant Manhattan apartment. But when her life takes an unexpected turn, Midge will quickly have to decide what else she's good at. Going from uptown housewife to a stand-up comic in a grungy club in the Village is an appalling choice to everyone but Midge."

Shalhoub will portray Abe Weissman, Miriam's father, described as "an academic and intellectual who believes in books and facts and speaking as little as possible."

Best known for his role as TV detective Adrian Monk, Shalhoub is the recipient of a Golden Globe and three Primetime Emmy Awards. He can currently be seen in the role of Red Wheatus in CBS's BrainDead. Additional TV credits include Nurse Jackie, Too Big to Fail and Wings. His film work includes Big Night, The Siege, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black, Men in Black II and Pain & Gain. He appeared in "Act One" and "Golden Boy" on Broadway, receiving Tony Award nominations for both.
