In celebration of Gryc's sixtieth birthday and thirteenth year of teaching at The Hartt School, the concert will include works composed during each of the past four decades, from the Five Preludes for Flute Alone of 1979 to the String Quartet of 2005. The tenth annual van Rooy Competition for Musical Excellence features performances by Hartt undergraduate instrumental performance majors competing for a top cash prize of $10,000, made possible by the generosity of Hartt supporters Jean-Pierre and Marie-Claire van Rooy. The finalists have been narrowed down from more than 30 applicants via two preliminary rounds and will present their final selections for the consideration of three adjudicators. The Hartt School presents The United States Coast Guard Band
The Hartt School presents The United States Coast Guard Band on Wednesday, November 18, at 7:30 PM in Lincoln Theater on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. In a "Windy City Preview," the U.S. Coast Guard Band performs classic works for wind band in a warm-up for its December appearance at the Midwest Conference in Chicago. Chief Musician (MUC) Josh Thomas is a soloist in Ingold Dahl's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Band and Musician 1st class (MU1) Lisa Williamson will sing Three Cabaret Songs by William Bolcom. Also included are works by Gregson, Prokofiev, Wagner, Schwantner, and Gorb. Admission is free. This event is sponsored by Hartt's Instrumental Studies Division.
