Following a successful workshop production through Manhattan Rep's Premiere Play Development Program this past January, I am, to you, A Stranger, written and performed by Teresa Catherine, will be presented for a one-night engagement at NYC's Theatre Row, on Thursday, September 29th, 7:30pm.

"What does it say about me, that you can betray me and everything I hold dear... and yet I still love you? Defend you and your memory in the face of such horror?" It is this question Lucy must face, caught between her love for John Wilkes Booth and her disgust at his actions against her closest family friends, the Lincolns.

Originally developed as Catherine's MFA acting thesis at the Catholic University of America, I am, to you, A Stranger is the nearly unbelievable, yet entirely true, story of Lucy Hale - daughter of an Abolitionist senator, best friend of Robert Lincoln, and secret fiancé of John Wilkes Booth. Her tale, inspired and informed by letters of the time and first-hand accounts of the aftermath of President Lincoln's assassination, is a classic example of truth truly being stranger than fiction. "Nearly every time I discuss my show, the first question I get is 'Is that a true story?'" explains Catherine. "I want Lucy to be known. It's striking to me that this girl was at the epicenter of one our country's most impactful historical events, and we have no idea who she was."

"Additionally, Lucy's struggle is at once so specific and so universal," continues Catherine. "We always think of love and heartbreak as being polar opposite emotions, that they are wholly separate. But the truth is, quite often, we feel them simultaneously. It is a paradox the mind cannot fully understand, but a state of being and feeling that is all to real for the heart."
