THERESE ET PIERRETTE wins your soul

Three young 6th grade friends, sexuality awakenings under the harsh judgemental look of the nuns, and all of this in a climate where war is going on; That’s Michel Tremblay’s setting for THERESE ET PIERRETTE A L’ECOLE DES SAINTS-ANGES, in a Serge Denoncourt adaptation.

Therese, Pierrette and Simone are the center of this story that may seem quiet and major turn of events, but that clearly stated a society in need of change. Like many of Tremblay’s plays, THERESE ET PIERRETTE brings forward women’s unhappiness and sorry conditions; a few joys, but that never go very far. The women are true and authentic; they are hurt, they are mad and they want change.

Gill Champagne’s direction brings justice to the magnificent play. Simple, modern and straight to the point. The set design complements that job very well. CHAMPAGNE brought together a strong ensemble of women; Claudine Ruelland, Maryse Lapierre and Chantal Dupuis are touching and very solid. But let’s not forget the amazing Linda Laplante, who plays Simone’s mother, and offers such a strong performance - true, touching - that she brings in two ovations during her monologue to the Mother Superior.

After seeing THERESE ET PIERRETTE, you leave the theater having laughed a lot, but also understanding more where you come from, being touched, and having a lot of compassion for these women who paved the way.
