SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION, 'JUDITH' and VINEGAR TOM Set for PTP/NYC This Summer

PTP/NYC (Potomac Theatre Project), in association with Middlebury College, proudly presents its 29th repertory season, its 9th consecutive in New York City, running from July 7 - August 9, 2015 in a limited 5-week Off-Broadway engagement at The Atlantic Stage 2, located at 330 West 16th Street between 8th & 9th Avenues.

This season's line-up includes a revival of Howard Barker's Scenes From An Execution, starring five-time Tony Award nominee and two-time Drama Desk Award winner Jan Maxwell in her 6th collaboration with PTP, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Richard Romagnoli, and a double bill featuring the New York Premiere of Howard Barker's Judith: A Parting from the Body, directed by Richard Romagnoli, along with a revival of Caryl Churchill's Vinegar Tom, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Cheryl Faraone. Previews begin on July 7 and openings begin on July 14.

Howard Barker's Scenes From An Execution begins previews July 7 for a July 15 opening and runs through August 9. The running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes including intermission.

Scenes From An Execution deals with the eternally fractious and complex relationship between the artist and the state. Galactia, a 15th century Venetian painter, is commissioned by the State of Venice to portray the Battle of Lepanto, a naval battle described as "the greatest triumph of Venetian history." However, her 1,000 square feet of canvas contains quite a different interpretation. Thus the battle over truth, freedom and responsibility is engaged.

Howard Barker's Judith: A Parting from the Body begins previews July 8 for a July 14 opening and runs through August 8. The running time is 1 hour.

The story of Judith is one of the great tales of female heroism and sexuality that has inspired artists in nearly every generation. In Barker's telling, the fatal encounter between Judith and Holofernes becomes a complex duel of seduction and deception and a compelling study of intense desire and the sometimes terrifying nature of love.

Caryl Churchill's Vinegar Tom begins previews July 8 for a July 14 opening and runs through August 8. The running time is 1 hour and 25 minutes.

A haunting play with seriously subversive intent - misogyny, torture and songs. In a village in 17th century England three women are threatened with death for the practice of witchcraft. Vinegar Tom is a cabaret about hanging witches, with no witches.

PTP/NYC (Potomac Theatre Project) continues to redefine politically aware theatre for the 21st century by presenting theatrically complex and thought-provoking work of contemporary social and cultural relevance. Howard Barker is one of PTP/NYC's most produced writers, along with Caryl Churchill, Neal Bell, Sarah Kane and David Edgar.

PTP was founded in 1987 by the artistic team of Cheryl Faraone, Jim Petosa and Richard Romagnoli. The company's Associate Artistic Director is Alex Draper. Since moving to New York in 2007, PTP/NYC has produced 19 main stage productions and numerous late evening readings, workshops and experimental theatre pieces in their After Dark series. PTP/NYC's 2013 New York Premiere of Howard Barker's The Castle and 2008 production of Barker's Scenes From An Execution each earned Jan Maxwell a Drama Desk Award nomination. The company won a New York Innovative Theatre Award (Megan Byrne for Best Actress in Barker's No End of Blame) and has been the recipient of 5 New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations.

During its 20 seasons (1987-2006) in Washington DC and Maryland, the company received 7 Helen Hayes Award nominations and produced 75 main stage productions, along with numerous new play readings, late night experimental productions and a variety of ancillary events. PTP/NYC is affiliated with the Theatre Program of Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont.
