The 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting - who has said his love of Broadway musicals dates to his childhood in Newcastle when his mother played Broadway cast recordings (CAROUSEL, OKLAHOMA!, etc.) that, to quote Sting, "I ate for breakfast," - just joined the cast of The Last Ship to create the original cast recording of his new musical. With music and lyrics by Sting, The Last Ship has a book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, is direced by Joe Mantello and choreographed by Steven Hoggett. The principal cast members - all of whom will be on site for the recording - include Michael Esper, Rachel Tucker, Jimmy Nail, Sally Ann Triplett, Aaron Lazar, Fred Applegate and Collin Kelly-Sordelet.
THE LAST SHIP - now playing on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 W. 52 St.) - opened on Sunday, October 26, hailed by the Associated Press as "thrilling, with powerful performances, outstanding songs and real heart. Simply beautiful."
THE LAST SHIP is the heart-soaring tale of a community that rallies in a singular way when its very way of life is threatened by the closing of the local shipyard. It is also the story of love and reconciliation about fathers and sons and two sons of shipbuilders in love with the same woman, a single mother who only wants to do what's right for her own son.
