The benefit concert "Rockers on Broadway - Jersey Style" took place on January 29th at BB Kings Blues Club and Grill on W. 42nd Street. The event, which was hosted by Caroline Rhea, benefited Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS.
"Rockers on Broadway - Jersey Style," which was put together by Jersey Boys cast member Donnie Kehr, featured that show's John Lloyd Young, Daniel Reichard, J. Robert Spencer and Dominic Nolfi, as well as pop legend Lesley Gore, Deborah Gibson, Grammy Award-winner Larry Gatlin, Micky Dolenz of the Monkees, Kathy Brier, Jarrod Emick, Michael Lanning, Greg Reuter, Sara Schmidt, Jeremy Schonfeld, Kate Taylor, and The Tokens ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight"), among others.
"Rockers On Broadway" was founded by Donnie Kehr in 1993 during the Broadway run of The Who's Tommy, in which he appeared. Inspired by an idea from Pete Townshend, he wanted to give musical theatre performers the opportunity to experience the feeling of singing with a rock band in a concert style venue, so they could understand and transfer the rawness of that edge to the stage," state press notes. The evening was sponsored by Sara Lee, Macy's and The Frye Company.
