Parthenia, New York's premiere viol consort, will be in concert on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 8:00 PMperforming King James and His Bible: Royal and Devotional Music from the Stuart and Tudor Courts at The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields, 487 Hudson Street in Manhattan.

Parthenia and guest bass-baritone Dashon Burton paint a musical portrait of King James I before and after the publication of his great English Bible in 1611. The music on this program represents the entire court music staff of King James I's "private music," showcasing works for viols and voice by Orlando Gibbons, Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger, Thomas Lupo, Thomas Tomkins, Thomas Weelkes and John Coprario, along with instrumental works by their brilliant colleague, John Jenkins.

Parthenia and Dashon Burton will depart from the 17th century/Jacobean era to perform a 21st-century setting of a Biblical text by composer Tawnie Olson. Olson's setting of John Hare's poem "Thorns" is a work that traces a particular strand in the narrative tapestry of salvation history.

Tickets are $40 and $25. For more information, call 212-866-0468 or visit http://www.parthenia.org.

Dashon Burton is much in demand as a soloist in oratorio and opera across the U.S. He has been praised for his "nobility and rich tone," (The New York Times) and his "enormous, thrilling voice seemingly capable ... [of] raising the dead;" (Wall Street Journal). Visit him at http://www.dashonburton.com/.
