Carlyle, Goldstein et al. Set for O'Neill's 2010 Nat'l Music Theater Conference, 6/26-7/16

Paulette Haupt, Artistic Director of the EuGene O'Neill Theater Center's National Music Theater Conference, today announced directors for music theater selections previously announced.

Warren Carlyle, director of the recent Broadway hit revival of Finian's Rainbow, will make his O'Neill directorial debut with Buddy's Tavern, (music by Kim Oler, lyrics by Alison Hubbard; book by Raymond De Felitta). Ray Fellman, who has worked on many O'Neill development projects, including Blood Drive and Iron Curtain, will serve as Music Director.

Daniel Goldstein, director of the upcoming Broadway revival of Godspell, will return to the O'Neill to direct Clear, (music by Stew and Paul Oakley Stovall; book and lyrics by Paul Oakley Stovall, with additional music by Irv Johnson and Stephen Goers). Brad Simmons, O'Neill Cabaret and Performance Conference Music Director, will serve as Music Director.

Stuart Ross, creator and director of the world famous Forever Plaid, will return to the O'Neill to direct Eden (music by Mel Marvin; book and lyrics by Jonathan Levi). Vadim Feichtner, currently the Music Director and Conductor for Off-Broadway's The Burnt Part Boys, will serve as Music Director.

Since its inception in 1978, the National Music Theater Conference, scheduled this year for June 26 to July 16 at the O'Neill Campus in Waterford, Connecticut, has been the premiere program for the development of new music theater. Many works and creators from past Conferences have gone on to receive prestigious recognition worldwide, including: In the Heights (2005 NMTC), Avenue Q (2002 NMTC), Nine (1979 NMTC), The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin (1998 NMTC), Violet (1994 NMTC), and Captains Courageous (1990 NMTC).

The EuGene O'Neill Theater Center, founded in 1964 in honor of EuGene O'Neill, four-time Pulitzer Prize Winner and America's only playwright to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, is the country's preeminent organization dedicated to the development of new works and new voices for the American theater. Warren Carlyle
Warren most recently directed and choreographed the Tony Nominated Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow which transferred from a highly acclaimed run at City Center Encores! Selected additional New York credits: directed and choreographed A Tale of Two Cities (Broadway), choreographed On the Town, Juno, and Stairway to Paradise (all Encores! at City Center); You Again (NY Fringe), Working (Zipper), Slut! (ATA), Roundabout 40th Gala 2006, and The 24 Hour Musicals at The Public Theater.

Regionally, he has choreographed Lucky Guy (Goodspeed), Mame (Kennedy Center), The Pirates of Penzance (Papermill; Goodspeed; Best Choreography, CT Critics Circle Award), The Baker's Wife (Goodspeed), and Pageant (Second City Chicago). In his Native England, his work has included has included Me and My Girl (director and choreographer, UK Tour; Best Production 2007 Theater Goers Choice Award), The Goodbye Girl (1st UK National Tour), Pageant (Vaudeville Theater), Sondheim's Moving On (Bridewell Theater), and Scrooge (European Tour).

He is represented on film and television by Deception starring Hugh Jackman (20th Century Fox), Hope and Faith (ABC), An Evening at the Boston Pops (PBS), and Elton John's Made in England video. As a resident director and choreographer, Mr. Carlyle's productions have included Jolson (London, Toronto), Fosse (London), and Oklahoma (London). As associate choreographer he has contributed to The Producers (Broadway, Worldwide and film), Oklahoma! (Broadway), and Center Stage(film).

Daniel Goldstein

Daniel Goldstein is the director of the upcoming Broadway revival of Godspell (2010/2011). His recent projects include True West (Williamstown Theater Festival), Miss Margarida's Way(Bay Street Theater, with Julie Halston), Annie (St. Louis MUNY), A New Brain at the Toho Theater in Tokyo, The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown (Broadway Across America developmental production), Mary's Wedding at the Two Rivers Theater, a highly praised revival of Godspell at the Papermill Playhouse, Sinan Unel's The Cry of the Reed at Huntington Theatre Company, Beau Willimon's Lower Ninth at the Flea and SPF, the Off-Broadway commercial production of the hit Fringe Festival musical Walmartopia, Kenny Finkle's Indoor/Outdoor at the DR2 and SPF, Falsettos and Les Liaisons Dangerouses at the Huntington, But I'm a Cheerleader at the New York Musical Theater Festival and Bathsheba Doran's Living Room in Africa at Gloucester Stage. He has served as the Associate Director for All Shook Up! and Fully Committed, and the Resident Director for the First National Tour of Mamma Mia! Daniel has developed the work of playwrights Peter Morris, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Rob Handel, John Shea, Bathsheba Doran, Janet Neipris and Eliza Jane Scheider at the O'Neill Playwright's Conference, PlayPenn, and elsewhere.

As a writer, he was the recipient of an inaugural Calderwood Commission from the Huntington Theater Company, for which he is writing an original musical. He is also developing a musical with Disney Theatrical and was the author, with Michael Friedman, of the musical Song of Songs. =Celebration, the one person show he created with Ethan Sandler and Josie Dickson, was seen Off-Broadway as well as New Haven, San Francisco and the HBO Aspen Comedy Arts Festival. He is a graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Performance Studies.

Stuart Ross
Stuart Ross is probably most well known for his work as the writer and director of Forever Plaid. In addition to directing the original New York production, he directed Plaid in major cities in the US and around the world. He has just finished directing the film of Forever Plaid for Hudson Pix, Stray Angels and The Company which will be released in the spring of 2010. Stuart also created and directed the Holiday sequel Plaid Tidings - which is currently in its 9TH year of Holiday chicanery, as well as the ‘GLEE CLUB' Version - The Sound of Plaid. Later this year further adventures in Tartan will have its premiere under the title of Random Acts of Plaidness.

Last Season he directed the acclaimed York Theatre production of Enter Laughing: The Musical, (Drama Desk, Lortel, Outer Critics Circle nominations) which is currently in preproduction for Broadway. For the YORK THEATRE he also directed It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman, Bajour, Minnie's Boys, Compose Yourself.

Mr. Ross wrote the script and co-wrote the lyrics for the New York's Public Theatre's production of Radiant Baby (directed by George C. Wolfe). This musical based on the life of artist Keith Haring, received Drama Desk Outer Critics Circle, and Lucille Lortel award nominations for Best musical.

His irreverent adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers was presented in workshop for The Roundabout Theater Company in New York. He has also created the new book for Silk Stockings for the Cole Porter Estate.

Regionally Mr. Ross directed productions of Promises, Promises( starring Jason Alexander, Jean Smart, Fred Willard and Allan Thicke.) and Brigadoon (starring Marin Mazzie, Jason Daniely, Deb Gibson and Orson Bean) It's a Wonderful Life for Pasadena Playhouse (Starring Alfred Molina, Michael Richards, Tony Shaloub, ShaRon Lawrence, and Orson Bean) Silk Stockings (also adaptation). The Boswell Sisters and Breaking UP at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre. He also wrote and directed Diahann Carroll: Life and Time which played to sell out crowds at Feinstein's in NYC and on tour. The New York Times called the presentation "Historic".

For the ‘06 RIPFEST film festival he wrote the short musical film Of Lesser Or Greater Value, starring Tonya Pinkins.

On Broadway Stuart wrote the book (with Barry Keating) to the Tony nominated musical Starmites as well as The Radio City Music Hall Easter Show. Off-Broadway he wrote A Leap of Faith (a one-woman show for Faith Prince), The Heebie Jeebies, Not-So-New Faces, Tea with Bea and Fun with Dick and Jane: The Musical.

For television, he directed episodes of Frasier and Veronica's Closet. He has also staged and created special material for the PBS Great Performances: An Evening at the Pops starring Jason Alexander.

Mr. Ross has written countless sketches for stage and has created many industrial shows and nightclub performances both as writer and director. In this field, he has worked with such great performers as Mary Martin, Diahann Carroll, Joan Rivers, Faith Prince, Jason Alexander, and Jaye P. Morgan.

For nine seasons Stuart has worked as a Director/Dramaturg and/or writer at the National Music Theater Conference, EuGene O'Neill Theater Center. For the past nine years he has been a panelist for the ASCPA Foundation/Disney Musical Theater Workshop.

Mr. Ross is Artistic Director for The Garage (Music Theatre Development program - A company for the nurturing and guidance of creators of Musical Theatre). He is the recipient of the Joseph Jefferson Award, the NBC New Playwrights Grant, and The State Department Grant for Cultural Exchange.

Currently, Stuart is co-directing/producing Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays New York Theatre Workshop (Writers include; Tony Kushner, Doug Wright, Paul Rudnick, Jose Rivera, Neil LaBute, and Kate Moira Ryan.

Ray Fellman
Ray Fellman divides his time between NYC and Bloomington where he is a Professor at Indiana University. Past O'Neill readings include: Blood Drive by Shenkin/Derfner, Iron Curtain by DiLallo/Weiner/Mills. M.D. credits: Stephen Schwartz's Captain Louie (Little Schubert Theater); Reluctant Pilgrim (Barrow Group); The Tutor by Gerle/Wood (59 E 59), .22 Caliber Mouth dir. Diane Paulus (Ohio Theater); Rosemary and Time w/ Liz McCartney (Laurie Beechman); Les Miserables, Phantom (Fulton Opera House, PA); Sweeney Todd (Teatro Nacional Sucre, Quito, Ecuador). Pianist/arranger- Les Miserables contribution to the B.C.E.F.A. 2007 Easter Bonnet Competition (Minskoff Theater) w/Tess Adams and Anne Runolfsson; M.D. 2007 Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs Awards at B.B. King's. 2007 Backstage Magazine Bistro Award for musical direction of The After Party, hosted by Brandon Cutrell. As an opera singer, Ray has sung lead roles with Florida Grand, New Orleans, Glimmerglass and Chautauqua Operas and the St. Louis and Indianapolis Symphonies.

Brad Simmons
Most recognized as The Pianist in the cult film Camp, Brad is an established performer, composer, musical director and vocal coach in New York City. Most recent music director credits include Mr. & Mrs. Fitch starring John Lithgow and Jennifer Ehle, directed by Scott Ellis (2econd Stage), Finian's Rainbow, Junior (ITheatrics), Amanda Green's Does This Song Make My Ass Look Fat? (O'Neill Theatre Center), Clear (Joe's Pub), Like Love (NYMF), The Ticket (Sage Theatre), Sunday in the Park With George (The Actors Studio/New School), Fairies (NYMF) and Starting Here, Starting Now with Richard Maltby & David Shire. Notable stage credits include Kiss Me Kate National Tour (Gangster #1), Hello Dolly! with Carole Cook (Cornelius), Yuletide Celebration with multi-Grammy Award winning artist Sandi Patty and most recently Grey Gardens (Gould). Composer credits include A Dickens of a Carol and A Kiss from Alexander that received a Best Score of a New Musical nomination for Chicago's Jefferson Awards. Both Dreamworld, The Musical and A Woman Onstage are in development. Brad Simmons Band recordings include Dreamworld, Mundane Existence, and Silent Night, available on ITunes. Vadim Feichtner
Was most recently the musical director/arranger of ...Spelling Bee on Broadway as well as the musical supervisor for the Chicago, Boston, S.F., L.A., and touring companies. Other recent credits include Elegies: A Song Cycle (LCT), Party Come Here (Williamstown), Ordinary Days (Roundabout), Burnt Part Boys (Playwrights Horizons), and Little Miss Sunshine (Sundance). As a composer, he co-wrote with William Finn, Songs of Innocence and Experience and well as the incidental music for The Public Theatre's As You Like It. Recordings: ...Spelling Bee (Grammy nom.), Elegies, I Sing!, Infinite Joy, Ordinary Days and Make Me A Song. Vadim is an alumnus of the NYU Musical Theatre Writing Program
