Celebrate Women's History Month with a Family Day in collaboration with the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access. This fun-filled day will feature performances by the Duncan Dancers and Simple Gifts Music. Experiment with oil pastels in the style of artist Georgia O'Keeffe and participate in an art-making activity led by illustrator Sushmita Mazumdar in the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard.

The Portrait Gallery presents a special series of Portrait Story Days in celebration of Women's History Month. Young visitors and their families may drop in to listen to a story about an influential woman in the Portrait Gallery's collection and create a piece of art inspired by her life and portrait.

An exemplary group of cool scholars, hosted by "American Cool" co-curators Joel Dinerstein and Frank Goodyear, will explore how three intersecting branches of cool-youth culture, popular culture and African American culture-affect style, marketing and society. Joel Dinerstein, co-curator of "American Cool" and the James H. Clark Endowed Chair in American Civilization at Tulane University, leads a tour of the exhibition. Meet at the exhibition entrance, second floor. Following the tour, Dinerstein will sign copies of the exhibition catalogue in the G Street lobby from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. The catalogue will be available for purchase in the museum shop.
National Portrait Gallery Pop Quiz: Curator's Choice! | Thursday, March 13, 6:30 p.m.

For tonight's collection-themed trivia game, Portrait Gallery curators and historians have selected some of their favorite portraits from the museum's collection. The winning team will receive a prize at the end of the evening. Food and beverages will be available for purchase in the Courtyard Café.

Portrait Gallery Historian Amy Henderson, curator of "Dancing the Dream," hosts a wine and cheese reception with Turner Classic Movies' Robert Osborne in the auditorium lobby. The reception will be followed by a conversation with Henderson and Osborne and a screening of "Flying Down to Rio" (1934).Tickets must be purchased in advance; reception and film screening, $50; film screening only $15.

Choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess and his dance company will hold public rehearsals for their second original dance work in the "Dancing the Dream" galleries. The new piece will debut at the John F. Kennedy Center Feb. 7-8, and at the Portrait Gallery's Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard on Saturday, April 19, at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. A Q&A session will follow each performance.

The National Portrait Gallery hosts a special presentation with filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer as part of the Environmental Film Festival. Tyrnauer discusses his current film-in-progress, A Matter of Death and Life, which looks at cities through the lens of Jane Jacobs, author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961). This hour-long presentation will include rarely seen archival clips of Jacobs. Tyrnauer is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair magazine; his previous films include Valentino: The Last Emperor.

Portrait Discovery Kits are an interactive and imaginative way for visitors to learn more about people who are in the Portrait Gallery's collection and their contributions to American history.
Telephone Dance Project | March 29, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard
Visitors can watch or participate in a site-specific dance experience with Telephone Dance Project (TDP). Taking inspiration from the exhibition "Dancing the Dream" and TDP's own methods, the members of TDP will lead a series of simple movement improvisations to create a work of art on the spot. Participants will look, listen and move their way into a deeper understanding of the art that exists all around them.
