Lin-Manuel Miranda Uses Musicals to Comment on Events in Ferguson, MO

By:

Over the past week, numerous celebrities have been taking to social media to advocate for a variety of extremely worthwhile causes; from the newest (#IceBucketChallenge) to the inspiring (#BwaySleepout2014) to the sorrowing (#Ferguson). Earlier this afternoon, Tony, Grammy, and recent Emmy-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda ("In the Heights," "Bring It On: The Musical," "Hamilton") took to Twitter (@Lin_Manuel) to share his heartache over the senseless violence and aftermath taking place nightly in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson.

Using his status as one of the most respected creative voices of a generation, Miranda quoted six musicals, including one of his own, to shed light, and comment, on a frightening moment in our country's history. For numerous reasons, over the past week, much of the best information on the situation in Ferguson has come from Twitter and other social media outlets (Vine, Vice News on YouTube), so it is appropriate that Miranda spoke out via this particular medium.

You can follow Miranda on Twitter @Lin_Manuel, and for all of the latest news and reaction to the happenings in Ferguson, MO, the Twitter hashtag #Ferguson has been an invaluable tool. Additionally, a memorial fund has been set up to support Mike Brown's family.
