The number of domestic violence incidents has declined by about 40 percent since 1995 in the United Kingdom, says a recent article in The Guardian, but the Home Office figures still estimate that about 1.2 million women are victims of domestic violence each year.

Jane Ellis was once a victim herself and understands the pain victims suffer. In her new book "Painted Smile" (published by AuthorHouse), Ellis recounts the horrific events of her abusive relationship and how she escaped, reminding all readers that there is a way out.

"This is happening to many women, and those who have been through it or trapped in it can read through other women's faces if it is happening to them," Ellis says.

Written in graphic detail, "Painted Smile" is Ellis' open and honest account of her abusive relationships and the scars that have never fully healed. As a young divorced mother, Ellis longed to feel loved and desired once more. When a handsome stranger sweeps her off her feet at a disco, he seems almost too good to be true. As she soon finds out, that is exactly what he is.

Suddenly, Ellis finds herself caught up in a whirlwind romance with the stranger who reveals himself to be Buster. Though their relationship seems idyllic, Buster controls Ellis and beats her if she does not do as he commands. It is only Kerry, Ellis' daughter, who gives her any comfort and eventually helps her mother find the courage and strength to leave Buster and take back control of her own life.
