Firehouse Theatre is pleased to announce the cast and production team of the regional premiere of The Fourth Wall by A.R. Gurney. This second show in the Firehouse Plays series poses the question if you sensed there was something better out there, would you have the courage to change everything by stepping through to the other side? Peggy has upset her husband Roger's comfortable suburban life by rearranging the furniture in the living room of their comfortable suburban home. Roger enlists longtime friend Julia and an expert from the local community college to help him persuade Peggy to be sensible and put the furniture back where it belongs. A.R. Gurney is the recipient of many awards including a Drama Desk Special Award, PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as a master American dramatist, and multiple Outer Critics Circle Awards.

The "fourth wall" is a foundational concept of naturalism/realism and refers to the imaginary separation between the stage and the audience. Gurney uses the fourth wall as a metaphor to consider the dissonance between what we are and what we aspire to be, and as a frame that highlights the tension between external reality and the possibility of something beyond. The play is a contemporary comedy of manners about breaking boundaries, the yearning for something different/better, and the risk of stepping through to the other side without knowing what's beyond.

Director Kerrigan Sullivan says, "this play brings to light so many aspects of our lives and I am looking forward to exploring the fourth wall with this incredibly talented cast and production team and sharing it with the Richmond community."

Kerrigan Sullivan is currently a Theatre Professor and the Chair of the Department of Performing Arts at John Tyler Community College. Kerrigan has worked with Firehouse as a producer and director on our Festival of New American Plays and she directed the world premier of This World We Know last season. Kerrigan holds a B.F.A. in Theater from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and an M.F.A. in Theater Directing from Brooklyn College. As an actress Kerrigan performed for years in New York City and regionally in theatre, film, and television. A few favorites are A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden, The Batman Forever Stunt Show at Six Flags Great Adventure, and Guiding Light. She has directed in and around New York City at various venues including The Producers Club, Samuel Beckett Theater, Raw Space, NADA, Expanded Arts, and Riant Theatre.
