Donmar Warehouse Ends 2008-2009 Season At 98% Yearlong Capacity

In yet another example of a theater enterprise that managed to stay above the economic fray, the Donmar Warehouse (producer of the current Broadway production of Hamlet starring Jude Law) announced that its yearlong West End season at the 750-seat Wyndham's Theater played to 98% of capacity.

The season consisted of four plays, all directed by Donmar Artistic Director Michael Grandage, ending with Hamlet in August. That production went on to play six performances at Elsinore and is now in previews at the Broadhurst Theater.

The season's other productions included Chekhov's "Ivanov" with Kenneth Branagh, Twelfth Night with Derek Jacobi, and Yukio Mishima's "Madame de Sade" starring Judi Dench.

Almost 14% of the audience members were first-time bookers, according to Donmar reports, with 42,900 tickets sold at £10 ($16) over the course of the year. Top prIce Throughout the season was $52. Sunday performances played to 97% of capacity across all four plays.

Hamlet is currenly in previews at the Broadhurst Theatre and opens October 6. Performances are Tuesday at 7:00 PM, Wednesday at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, Thursday and Friday at 7:30 PM, Saturday at 2:00 and 8:00 PM, Sunday at 3:00 PM. A limited number of $35 tickets, subject to availability, will be made available for purchase by students at the Broadhurst Theatre box office on the day of the performance only.
