Imagine waiting for a hummingbird, elusive, beautiful and so different from all other birds. When at last people find themselves in its presence, their hearts become captivated by this beautiful and ethereal creature. In her new book, "The Hummer and the Hummed," author Sister María del Sagrado Corazón compares God to a hummingbird. In 16 short chapters, she takes the reader on a journey of faith and contemplation, drawing on works by St. Thomas of Aquinas, St. Catalina and other spiritual mystics.

Christians yearn to dwell in the presence of God, yet this is not an easy undertaking. Even the most devout of saints and spiritual leaders have struggled in their search for oneness with the Creator. Much like catching a glimpse of a hummingbird as it hovers above a flower or feeder, the author writes, feeling a connection to God can be fleeting, yet at the same time, it changes Christians forever. Similar to preparing the way for a hummingbird to come and feed, the faithful need to prepare the way for God to come into their lives as they pray.

"The Hummer and the Hummed: A Contemplative Reflection on the Spiritual Life" touches on the importance of faith, patience, preparation, temptation, friendship and looking for answers. Striking photographs of hummingbirds - many of them captured in mid-flight - add another dimension to the contemplations the book inspires.

Sister María del Sagrado Corazón (María of the Sacred Heart) has been a member of the Dominican order in West Springfield, Mass., since 1964. She has written several books and articles and has taught lessons about the Psalms. Sister Maria was given a hummingbird feeder, which drew a hummingbird to the abbey's garden. It began to visit frequently. When the bird wasn't there, Sister Maria yearned for its presence again.
