Disney Pursuing CABARET Alum Emma Stone for Live-Action Cruella de Vil Origin Story

Disney may have found the star to bring its live-action Cruelle de Vil origin tale to life.

According to Variety, CABARET alum Emma Stone is currently in early talks to take on the role of the fashionably-cruel dog-napper.

Screenwriter Kelly Marcel (SAVING MR. BANKS, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) is currently attached to the project, entitled CRUELLA. The film will detail the character's origin story in the same vein as the Angelina Jolie-led MALEFICENT.

A director has yet to be announced for the project.

Should Stone sign on, she would be the second Broadway vet to play de Vil - three-time Tony winner Glenn Close previously played the famous Disney villainous in 1996's 101 DALMATIONS and 2000's 102 DALMATIONS.

This is the fourth live-action adaptation of a Disney cartoon planned through 2020, alongside previously announced THE JUNGLE BOOK, ALICE TRHOUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

Stone made her feature film debut in Superbad (2007). She co-starred in The House Bunny (2008), Zombieland (2009), and Paper Man (2009). In 2010, Stone made her leading debut in Easy A, for which she received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy. Stone's other films include Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), The Help (2011) The Amazing Spider-Man film series (2012, 2014) as Gwen Stacy, and the animated film The Croods (2013).

In 2014, Stone co-starred in Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight and Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Her performance in Birdman earned her nominations for the SAG, Golden Globe, BAFTA andAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actress. On November 11, 2014, she made her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, which she performed until February 15, 2015.
