Clarice Jensen and Jonathan Turner Come to The Kitchen, 5/17

The Kitchen will present Clarice Jensen and Jonathan Turner: For this from that will be filled on May 17.This first-time collaboration between cellist Clarice Jensen and artist Jonathan Turner presents three world-premiere compositions and explores the variable differences between acoustic and electronic sound, and between simulation and the unconscious, through repetition and layering.

Building on a long, romantic tradition of solo cello repertoire, Jensen expands and confuses the instrument's familiar sound with effects pedals, multi-tracking, and tape loops recorded at variable speeds in a work she has written for herself as well as a piece she conceived of with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. Also featured is Michael Harrison's Cello Constellations for multi-tracked cello and sine tones, written for Jensen. Projections by Turner conjure an interior environment of unknown scale or place whose texture and design draw from domestic and commercial aesthetics, with distorted and deforming siren-like figures appearing in the void.

Ticket holders are invited to experience Michael Harrison's sine tone audio installation playing in the performance space beginning at 6:30pm.

About the Artists

New York-based cellist Clarice Jensen is committed to performing music of any genre or style, from the solo cello suites of J.S. Bach, to new music by Elliott Carter or Steve Reich, as well as her own compositions. In addition to the ensemble she founded and leads, ACME: American Contemporary Music Ensemble ("vital," "brilliant," "electrifying," The New York Times), she has performed and collaborated with a myriad of musicians including Paul McCartney, Nick Cave, The National, Owen Pallett, My Brightest Diamond (Shara Worden), Max Richter, Stars of the Lid, Dustin O'Halloran, Shudder to Think, and Jo?hann Jo?hannsson. She has recorded with The Arcade Fire, Tift Merritt, Sean Lennon, Ratatat, Hole, Tyondai Braxton, Doveman, Jo?nsi, !!!, Owen Pallett, Matmos and many others, and can also be heard on Nico Muhly's Speaks Volumes album.

Jonathan Turner is a Brooklyn-based artist working in video, animation, print, installation and performance. As a solo artist and as a member of the art collective Yemenwed, Turner has been exploring the circumstances and depiction of an increasingly technology-influenced human and natural world. Turner has collaborated with musicians Glasser and Dutch E Germ, artists Tauba Auerbach, Matt Keegan, Josh Kline and Anicka Yi, and fashion designers Hood by Air and Telfar. Through his solo practice and collaborations, Turner's work has been exhibited at the Perez Art Museum, Miami; Tate Modern, London; MoMA, New York; MoMA P.S.1, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C.
