Canton Youth Symphony Presents Rimsky-Korsakov's SCHEHERAZADE as Season Finale, 4/27

"Senior-itis" might be used to describe high school students sloughing off their final year, but for Canton Youth Symphony seniors, "easy" isn't in their vocabulary. With grandeur and fanfare, the Canton Youth Symphony will perform Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade for the season's final concert.

Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights - also known as The Arabian Nights - Rimsky-Korsakov composed a stellar and complex symphonic suite that echoes the passionate narratives typical of the Orient and the period in which he composed it (late 19th century).

Rachel Waddell, Canton Youth Symphony Conductor, stated, "It is remarkable that this group, which ranges from grades 5-12, is able to perform such a monumental work.Scheherazade is really a showpiece for orchestra. It includes virtuosic solos for almost every instrumentalist and challenging passages. The piece tells a story that I think captures the students' imaginations and this is why they've been so focused in learning it and performing it at this level. I cannot think of a better way to salute our many graduating seniors and set a high precedent for future seasons' performances."

This year's graduating seniors are: Kelsey Darrah (Rootstown HS), Alex Gesaman (Tuslaw HS), Rachel Graber (homeschool), Cody Klette (GlenOak HS), Scott Marino II (Jackson HS), Max Marsillo (Revere HS), Ian Namiotka (Jackson HS), Dan Norcia (GlenOak HS), and Mario Traina (Minerva HS). There will be a brief recognition from the stage for these seniors as well as a post-concert reception.

Waddell continues, "This group of seniors has displayed amazing leadership skills. Many of them have been section leaders either this year or at some point during their tenure with our youth symphony. They should be proud of their hard work and talent. I anticipate many of them will accomplish even greater musical achievements at the next level."

The Canton Youth Symphony's performance is April 27 at 4pm at GlenOak High School.

Tickets for youth symphony concerts are only $7 for adults and $3 for students. Dress is casual and performances are appropriate for ages 8 and older. Tickets are available by walk-up at the concert.

Founded in 1963, the Canton Youth Symphony is comprised of northeast Ohio students in grades 6-12, dedicated to performing concerts that enrich, educate and entertain.
