Variety reports that Peter Gallagher, who recently starred in Broadway's ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, has joined the cast of NBC's adaptation of the 1990's film CRUEL INTENTIONS. The actor joins previously announced actor Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil in the TV adaptation.

The project will follow Gellar's Kathryn, now an adult, as she "vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey (newcomer Taylor John Smith), the son of the late Sebastian Valmont and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father's legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined."

Gallagher will portray Edward Valmont, described as a "sexy, beguiling, sophisticated, powerful and ruthless billionaire hotel magnate with fingers in many far-reaching financial pies - some legal, some not so much. Edward is delighted to discover that he's got a long-lost grandson in the newly arrived Bash Casey and once the DNA test proves his claim, Edward immediately starts grooming Bash for a life of impossible wealth and opportunity."

Gallagher starred opposite Kristin Chenoweth in Roundabout Theatre Company's production of On the Twentieth Century. His other Broadway credits include The Real Thing (Clarence Derwent Award) and The Country Girl directed by Mike Nichols, Guys and Dolls (Drama Desk nomination), Long Day's Journey Into Night (Tony Award nomination), Noises Off, The Corn Is Green (Theatre World Award), Comden and Green's A Doll's Life directed by Hal Prince, Grease (original production), Hair.

Film work includes American Beauty (SAG Award); sex, lies and videotape and The Underneath by Steven Soderbergh; THE PLAYER and Short Cuts (Golden Globe) directed by Robert Altman; While You Were Sleeping; Dreamchild; The Idolmaker; upcoming: Hello, My Name Is Doris. Television credit include "The OC," "Law & Order: SVU," "Togetherness," "Covert Affairs," "Californication," "Rescue Me." Recordings: 7 Days In Memphis, Pal Joey, Guys and Dolls.
