BWW Interviews: TED NEELEY, l'uomo oltre 'Jesus Christ Superstar'

E' terminato da qualche giorno il tuor italiano di Jesus Christ Superstar XX Anniversario, firmato da Massimo Romeo Piparo e prodotto da Peep Arrow Entertainment nella versione originale di Andrew Lloyd Webber e Tim Rice. Per la prima volta nella storia italiana, il ruolo di Gesù è interpretato da TED NEELEY, il Gesù "originale" dello storico film di Norman Jewison del 1973.
BroadwayWorld Italia ha avuto l'onore di intervistare il celebre interprete, Ted Neeley, a proposito del tour italiano, della sua vita e carriera e del suo nuovo album, "Rock Opera".
Ricordiamo che il nuovo cd di Ted Neeley, "Rock Opera", è uscito in aprile 2014. "Rock Opera" presenta cinque singoli tratti da "Jesus Christ Superstar" e "Tommy", con la collaborazione di amici di vecchia data. L'album include il pezzo "See Me, Feel Me" dei The Who, una collaborazione con Yvonne Elliman nel duetto "Up Where We Belong" e, grazie alla tecnologia moderna, un duetto con Carl Anderson ("God's Gift To The World"). Sono inoltre contenuti nell'album "Do I Have To Say The Words" di Bryan Adams e il classico natalizio "O Holy Night". "Rock Opera" è prodotto da Frank Munoz (Ace Frehley's Anomaly, Jason Newsted's METAL EP) e nasce dalla collaborazione con Pledge Music e TedHead Records.
BWW: Grazie infinite per aver accettato quest'intervista. Ci piacerebbe concentrarci sulla tua intera carriera, non solo Jesus Christ Superstar, ma permettici prima una domanda su questo spettacolo: cosa si prova ad interpretare Gesù dopo tanti anni?
Come la profonda spiritualità drammatica evocata dalla magnifica musica di Andrew Lloyd Webber e dai brillanti testi di Tim Rice, così è radicata la mia passione per quell'ondata di sentimenti che traspare dall'eleganza e dalla struggente onestà di Jesus Christ Superstar. Non potrei mai averne abbastanza.
Mi affascina la possibilità di continuare questo viaggio che copre gli ultimi sette giorni della vita di Gesù di Nazareth, rivisto e interpretato attraverso attraverso gli occhi dei suoi contemporanei, ciascuno dei quali riconosceva in lui un Uomo onesto e proverbiale.
La mia esperienza, nel percorrere il cammino di profonda spiritualità umana che è questo adattamento di Weber/Rice, è stata una continua rivelazione. Un'ispirazione nata apertamente ed onestamente dalla musica, che è in grado di placare l'anima della bestia più selvaggia.
Molte persone mi hanno detto: "rivedo una parte di me nel personaggio che interpreti". Gli spettatori lasciano il teatro dicendo: "questo spettacolo mi è arrivato dritto al cuore", "questo spettacolo ha cambiato la mia vita", "questo film è stato un'epifania!", "questa è la colonna sonora della mia vita!".
Come lo so? Perché parlo con gli spettatori ogni sera dopo lo spettacolo e in quel momento, in un abbraccio, Madri, Padri, Sorelle, Fratelli, Nonni, Nipoti, persone di ogni età dai 4 ai 104 anni, persone di ogni razza, credo ed etnia, vengono da me a cuore aperto e a braccia aperte dicendo "Grazie per tutte queste emozioni!", "Grazie per avermi aiutato a scoprire la mia fede!", "Grazie per avere aiutato me, i miei genitori, i miei figli ed ora anche i miei nipoti a scoprire la verità alla base della spiritualità e della fratellanza umana".
Circondato da queste magnifiche espressioni di speranza, pace, amore e luce, nessuno potrebbe provare un sentimento migliore né potrebbe avere un approccio migliore alla vita. Come ho detto prima: non potrei mai averne abbastanza.
BWW: Dato che tutti ti conoscono come Gesù, è difficile interpretare altri personaggi?
Se la tua prima affermazione è vera, e tutti mi conoscono come Gesù, allora mi ritengo estremamente fortunato e felice di essere membro di questa comunità globale. Nulla è meglio dell'essere conosciuto per aver svolto, nella tua vita, un compito con passione e virtù; per essere stato parte di qualcosa di profondamente spirituale come questa magnifica rappresentazione. Ripeto, non potrei esserne più onorato.
Nonostante abbia avuto il piacere di interpretare diversi personaggi, nessuno di essi si è mai avvicinato al livello di soddisfazione e completezza personale quanto quello di Gesù, livello costantemente raggiunto nella mia lunga esperienza in quest'opera.
BWW: Quali altri personaggi di musical vorresti o avresti sempre voluto interpretare?
Ho sempre voluto interpretare Vincent Van Gogh. Spero che un giorno questo progetto sarà portato a termine e la sua produzione sarà completata.
BWW: Ti consideri principalmente un cantante, un attore, un autore o un produttore?
Ho cominciato la mia carriera in una piccola città del Texas come batterista e cantante di rock'n'roll, cantante che, insolitamente, riusciva a raggiungere note molto alte. Ciò che ho sempre voluto fare, almeno all'inizio, era cantare e suonare la batteria.
Molto in fretta, e con molto entusiasmo, ho imparato ad amare tutto ciò che riguarda la recitazione, la scrittura e la produzione, perciò sono molto grato a tutte quelle meravigliose persone che vedevano in me quelle doti ed hanno avuto il coraggio di rischiare e di credere in me.
Ma senza dubbio sono riuscito a sviluppare queste abilità perché sono, prima di tutto, un cantante.
BWW: Se ripensi alla tua carriera (e alla tua vita), quali sono state le tue più grandi soddisfazioni? Cosa ami ricordare?
Non sono solito guardare al passato. Sono onorato per tutti quei progetti a cui ho avuto il piacere di partecipare. Ho sempre apprezzato tutte le opportunità, considerandole di volta in volta l'evento più importante in quel momento della mia vita, perché mi meravigliava come questi progetti arrivassero... sai com'è, stando al posto giusto nel momento giusto.
Si comincia celebrando il nuovo percorso con ogni singolo membro del progetto, poi si procede, con un atteggiamento positivo e - si spera - insieme verso un nuova strada, quella che sembra più appropriata alle nostre capacità.
Sarò per sempre grato a tutti coloro che lavorano in modo così diligente da rendere ciascuno di questi sogni artistici in primis possibile, accessibile, per poi dedicarsi ad essi fino a renderli dei progetti di ineguagliabile successo.
Finché questo percorso continuerà ad essere così positivo, e in qualche modo misterioso, ci sarò.
BWW: Il tuo nuovo cd, "Rock Opera", è uscito in aprile. Cosa puoi dirci di questo progetto e della collaborazione con altri grandi artisti come Carl Anderson e Yvonne Elliman?
Potrei essere più felice del mio nuovo cd, "Rock Opera", solo se la sua realizzazione fosse continuata in eterno.
"Rock Opera" è un lavoro di devozione e rispetto, e allo stesso tempo di celebrazione di importanti amicizie. Siamo anche riusciti a trovare un modo per rifare, in versione rock, il classico natalizio "O Holy Night!".
Vivere i piaceri della musica affianco ad artisti che ammiri e ad amici che rispetti è, senza se né ma, il mio più grande sogno artistico. Ecco come mi sento durante questi magici momenti d'ispirazione musicale al fianco di Carl ed Yvonne. Siamo amici e collaboratori. Crediamo nella pace e lavoriamo per la pace, l'amore, la luce.
Spero profondamente che amici, in qualsiasi parte del mondo, possano riprovare quest'esperienza di vicinanza umana e spirituale nell'ascoltare queste canzoni.
BWW: Hai passato molto tempo in Italia con il tour per il XX Anniversario di Jesus Christ Superstar. Dato che, come saprai, gli italiani amano parlare di se stessi... come ti sei trovato? Com'è il pubblico italiano?
Sono arrivato nel vostro splendido e storicamente moderno Paese nel 2014, all'inizio di marzo. Il direttore e produttore dello spettacolo, Massimo Romeo Piparo, che ha apertamente ammesso di essere un grandissimo fan del nostro amato film "Jesus Christ Superstar", mi ha chiesto con estrema gentilezza di far parte della nuova produzione dell'Original Rock Opera Theatrical Event, in scena al Teatro Sistina di Roma per celebrarne il XX Anniversario. Fortunatamente, dato il riscontro positivo, sono ancora in Italia nel febbraio 2015!
Da dove provengo, questa è un vero e proprio festeggiamento!
Gli spettatori italiano sono assolutamente fantastici! Festeggiano con noi ogni sera a teatro e poi ritornano, portando degli amici con sé, e festeggiano ancora di più. E' incredibile quanti devoti di "Jesus Christ Superstar" ci siano in Italia e quanti ritornino a vedere lo spettacolo anche fuori da Roma, durante il nostro tour per le varie città del vostro bellissimo Paese.
Ho avuto il piacere d'incontrare persone splendide. Mi ritengo molto fortunato, perché ho avuto la possibilità di stringere nuove e profonde amicizie. Per merito di quelle amicizie, ora in Italia mi sento a casa e vorrei ringraziare infinitamente ciascuno di voi per avermi accolto con amore.
Ora ci prenderemo una pausa, per un Screening Tour e Spring Festivals in America. Torneremo in giugno per l'Expo di Milano. Non vedo l'ora di tornare per conoscere nuove persone, sarà anche quella un'avventura.

BWW: Thank you very much for agreeing this interview. We'd like to focus this interview on your entire career, not just Jesus Christ Superstar, but as a first question: how's being Jesus again, after so many years?
As deeply set as the dramatic spirituality is within the magnificent music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the brilliant lyrics of Tim Rice .... so then is my passion for the pathos that rises up from within the remarkably elegant yet heart wrenching honesty of, "Jesus Christ Superstar." I cannot get enough. It constantly beckons me to continue within the journey covering the the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, as seen and interpreted for us through the confused and fear filled eyes of his contemporaries, all of whom saw him as a very outspoken, proverbial Man.
My experience, while walking within the deeply felt human spiritual light of this wonderful Webber/Rice adaptation, has continually been a revelation .... as it is defined openly and honestly through the inspirational comfort of music, which soothes the soul of the savage beast. People come to me continually saying, I can see a bit of myself through the eyes of the character you play. Audience members who see this show walk away saying, ".... It hit me right in my heart!" ".... I cried all through the show!" ".... This show changed my life!" "This movie .... an epiphany!" "This is the soundtrack of my life!" How do I know this? Because I speak with the audience members each night after the show and there, as we embrace .... Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Grandparents, Grandchildren, people of all ages from 4 to 104, people of all races, creeds and ethnicities, come to me with open hearts, with arms wide open saying, "Thank you for the emotion!" "Thank you for helping me discover my faith!" "Thank you for helping my parents and me, my children and now even my grandchildren understand the truth within the concept of our human, connective spirituality!" I cannot imagine anyone feeling anything but the best of all possible positive mind sets and outlooks on life, when constantly surrounded by these magnificent expressions of hope, peace, love and light. As I said before .... I cannot get enough.
BWW: Since everyone knows you as Jesus, is it hard to play different characters?
If your first statement within this question is true, then I am an extremely fortunate and very happy member of our worldwide community. What could be better than being known by everyone by virtue of something you've done in life. Then to be known for something as deeply felt and purely spiritual as this wonderful, passionate presentation .... again I say, I could not be more honored.
Regarding different characters, though I have had the pleasure of playing many, no other one has ever come close to the personal fulfillment that is always reached within the experience of this dramatic work.
BWW: What other musical theatre characters would you like to play or you've always wanted to play?
I have always wanted to portray Vincent Van Gogh. Hopefully, one day soon the project will be complete and the production can be presented.
BWW: Do you identify yourself more as a singer, an actor, an author or a producer?
I started out in a small Texas town as a singing Rock'N'Roll drummer who could hit these unusual high notes. All I ever wanted to do, at least in the beginning anyway, was sing and play drums. How very quickly and enthusiastically I learned to love everything about the process of acting, writing and producing and I am so thankful for the wonderful people who were courageous enough to take chances regarding what they perceived as my abilities. But there is no question that I've been able to fulfill these various capacities because I am first, a singer.
BWW: If you take a look back at your career (and life) so far, what were your greatest achievements? What do you like to remember the most?
Looking back is not something I dwell upon. I am honored by all of the projects within which I have received the pleasure of participation. I always appreciate each opportunity I have been given as the most important event at the time, because I am amazed that each of these wonderful opportunities arrived where I was standing. You know .... right place, right time. Therefore, I celebrate with each individual in the process throughout the project, then we all move positively and hopefully together into the next beckoning path that feels most appropriate for our individual abilities. I shall remain forever grateful to all those who always work together so diligently to make each of these artistic dreams become first, viable, then accessible and ultimately follow them all the way through into remarkably successful projects. For as long as the open path continues to beckon positively, and even somewhat mysteriously .... I will be there.
BWW: Your new cd, "Rock Opera", was released in April. What can you tell us about it and the collaboration with other great artists such as Carl Anderson and Yvonne Elliman?
The only way I could be any happier with the new cd, "Rock Opera", is if the entire process could continue unbroken .... infinitely. "Rock Opera" is a work of devotion and respect within the celebration of loving friendships. We even found a way to do our "Rock Opera" version of the amazing Christmas Classic, "Oh Holy Night"! And to be able to experience the pleasures of music alongside an artist you admire and a dear friend whom you respect, without question or pause, is the ultimate artistic dream come true, for me. That is how I feel within these magical moments of music inspiration beside Carl and Yvonne. Are we friends Friends .... Yes. Collaborators .... Yes. Believers in and workers for peace, love and light .... Absolutely. I sincerely hope that friends all around the world will be able to feel and embrace these personal human spiritual relationships, as they listen to the personal experiences within these songs.
BWW: You've spent a lot of time in Italy with the Jesus Christ Superstar XX Anniversary. And you should probably know that Italians love to talk about themselves. So, how did you find yourself in Italy? How's the Italian audience?
I found myself here in your beautiful, historically modern country in early March of 2014 because the celebrated director/producer, Mr. Massimo Romeo Piparo, who openly admits to being one of the world's biggest fans of our beloved film, "Jesus Christ Superstar", was extremely kind enough to suggest that I participate within his new production of the Original Rock Opera Theatrical Event, live on stage at the renowned IL Teatro Sistina in Rome celebrating his Twentieth Anniversary of presenting this wonderful show in Italy. Fortunately, because of the tremendous reception we have received, I am still here in February of 2015! Where I come from, that is truly a celebration.
The Italian audiences are absolutely fantastic! They celebrate with us each night in the theatre and then they come back again and again, with their friends, and celebrate even more. It is amazing how many wonderful "Jesus Christ superstar" devotees there are here in Italy and how many return so frequently to see the show even outside of Rome, as we tour many other cities throughout your remarkable country. The people I've had the pleasure of meeting here are wonderful .... I am so fortunate to have the opportunity of making so many deeply connected new friendships here. Because of those friendships, I now feel at home in Italy and I thank each of you, infinitely, for your open and loving welcome.
We are taking a break now, for a Screening Tour and Spring Festivals in America. However, we shall return in June, 2015 for Expo Milano. I look forward to this being the wonderful opportunity for more face to face encounters during that adventure, as well.
