Fred Applegate has been confirmed as the next London Bialystock.

Following in the footsteps of current Max Brad Oscar, Applegate will step into The Producers at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on April 25th. Joining him will be John Gordon Sinclair, who will replace Lee Evans as Max' meek sidekick Leo Bloom.

Applegate's casting might come as suprising to those who were expecting a bigger name. Yet his starry predecessors have faced problems that demanded either dismissal or early departures. Both Richard Dreyfuss and Nathan Lane bowed out due to back problems (although some have speculated that Dreyfuss was let go during rehearsals for his unimpressive performance). Brad Oscar, an experienced Broadway Bialystock, took over for the injured Lane and is currently playing the role.

The American Applegate (who is going to London as part of an Actors' Equity exchange program) has played Bialystock for over 800 performances on Broadway and on tour. He played another Max in the 1998 Broadway revival of The Sound of Music, and was Cogsworth in an LA production of Beauty and the Beast.

Gordon Sinclair became famous for his performance in the 1981 film Gregory's Girl. He received a 1995 Olivier Award for his performance in She Loves Me.

The Producers
recently won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, as well as Best Actor in a Musical for Lane and Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Conleth Hill.

Applegate and Gordon Sinclair join a cast that includes Hill as Roger DeBris, James Dreyfuss as Carmen Ghia, Nicholas Colicos as Franz Liebkind, and Leigh Zimmerman as Ulla.
