Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and Soovin Kim Presents REGIONAL REFLECTIONS This Weekend

Award winning violinist Soovin Kim will join Music Director José-Luis Novo and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) for concerts at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts today, April 4 and Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 8pm. The program will begin with Mr. Kim as soloist in Béla Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2, and conclude withAntonín Dvo?ák's Symphony No. 6.

Korean-American violinist and Peabody Conservatory faculty member, Soovin Kim is an exciting young player who has built on the early successes of his prize-winning years to emerge as a mature and communicative artist. At the age of 20, he captured first prize in the Paganini International Competition and subsequently was the recipient of the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award. Now Mr. Kim enjoys a broad musical career regularly performing repertoire such as Mozart and Vivaldi concerti without conductor as well as big romantic concerti with major orchestras in Europe, Asia and the US.

Bartók composed his second violin concerto in 1937-38 at a difficult stage of his life, when he was filled with serious concerns about the growing strength of fascism. He was a firm anti-fascist, and therefore became the target of various attacks in pre-war Hungary. The first of Dvo?ák's large scale works to draw international attention, Symphony No. 6 in D Major manages to capture a bit of the Czech national style within a standard Germanic classical-romantic form.

Adult tickets for the upcoming concerts start at $25, and student tickets are $10. Single tickets can be purchased through the ASO website at www.annapolissymphony.org, by calling 410-263-0907, or by stopping by the ASO Box Office in room 204 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, Monday through Friday, 9:30am - 5:30pm.

All ticket holders are invited to attend a free pre-concert lecture in the auditorium at 6:45pm. Led by British pianist and lecturer Dr. Rachel Franklin, these entertaining talks enhance the concert experience by providing historical and insightful perspectives on that evening's repertoire.
