The loss of a loved one is perhaps the most difficult emotional struggle faced by every human being. When Amy Lewis was with her young husband moments after his unexpected death, "what I witnessed when I looked into his eyes was the beginning of my own personal revolution." What Freedom Smells Like (Anomaly Press) is a memoir born of both a supernatural love story and a tale of transformative healing.

"Experiencing his spirit after his death led me to a place where all my past pain and struggles were transformed and healed," she explains. At 22, Amy had already spent time in a mental hospital and battled an addiction to self-cutting. In college, she fell in love with Truth, a charming black man who was passionate and protective. Truth was also violent and abusive. Amy's own self-destructive tendencies created a powerful symmetry, and a relationship that proved stronger than death. Feeling his otherworldly presence in her dreams, Amy sought help from a famous medium. What she learned, about herself and Truth, transforms her life.

Told with simple honesty and a devilishly dark sense of humor, What Freedom Smells Like recounts Amy's spiritual journey and the gentle influence of a man who only discovers what is important after his own death. Emboldened by the knowledge her essence is eternally indestructible, Amy became the artist and actress she was destined to be, channeling her pain into her art and learning to let go of the past.

Amy Lewis grew up in New Orleans. A performance poet and actress, Amy has a Master's degree in Spiritual Psychology. She wrote and starred in the one-woman show Waking the Witch, and has acted in various indie films. Amy also performs poetry in numerous spoken word and Live Lit events in the Los Angeles area. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her six-year-old daughter. What Freedom Smells Like is her first memoir.
