  3. Chispa: Latin Diva Series, Sofia Rei

Originally from Buenos Aires, Sofía Rei is one of the most charismatic and inventive vocalists on the New York music scene today. Her music is grounded in traditional South American rhythms such as chacarera, zamba and vidala from Argentina, Afro-Peruvian festejo and landó, Afro-Uruguayan candombe, Colombian cumbia and bullerengue, and other genres that merge with jazz harmonies, electronic sounds, and rich improvisations. Singing in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, she ties these diverse influences together in a unique repertoire full of rhythmic complexity and melodic purity.

She began her musical career at the age of nine as a member of the Colón Theater Children's Choir, holds a master's degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA, and is currently a faculty member at Berklee College of Music (Boston) and the New York Jazz Academy (NYC). She has toured North and South America and Europe, performing at numerous internationally renowned festivals and venues; her critically acclaimed albums include Ojalá, Sube Azul, and De Tierra y Oro.

Sofía Rei's performance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in March 2015 is the 19th concert in the Center's signature Latin Diva Series, an integral part of its Chispa musical season. The series, presented in partnership with Avokado Artists, features Latina/Hispanic artists worldwide who are initiating or continuing successful international careers. March concerts are also a highlight of Women and Creativity, a month-long event designed by the NHCC in 2006 to celebrate Women's History Month.
