Lena Luthor's ex-boyfriend, Jack Spheer, makes an appearance on this week's episode of SUPERGIRL, but he's not exactly what he seems to be. Kara accompanies Lena to a press conference at which Jack reveals a breakthrough in nano-technology. While Jack attempts to reunite with Lena, Kara tries to prove to her old boss Snapper Carr that she is a good journalist. Meanwhile, Winn and James fight about Lyra joining their team. This return from their mini hiatus was certainly an action-packed episode.

Kara arrives at the DEO ready to go, but National City is strangely devoid of crimes. Back at her apartment, she's baking--or rather, trying to. (I thought it was a nice touch that she didn't use oven mitts because well...I guess Supergirl wouldn't need those.) Lena Luthor shows up at her door to ask her for a favor. Her ex-boyfriend's company is having a press conference to unveil a big breakthrough and she was given a press pass. Kara eagerly agrees to attend with her when she asks.

Kara's nemesis and former boss, Snapper Carr, is at the press conference of course and can't resist making some snide comments about Kara not being a real reporter. Jack Spheer (played by the absolutely dreamy Rahul Kohli) makes a powerful entrance to the conference. He reveals that he has cracked the code for a medical miracle called Biamax. They plan to launch the nanobots across National City as it should be able to eradicate disease. When the Q&A session opens up, Snapper tries to interrupt Kara's question but she manages to ask and Jack is impressed.

After the conference, Lena introduces Kara to Jack and it's clear that there's some unsettled tension between the two. Jack invites Lena to dinner, but she refuses. A random guy asks Kara to meet him later so that he can tell her something about Jack. "You're the only reporter that I can trust," he says.

When Kara goes to meet the man, he says that he chose to tell her because she actually wants to help people. He reveals that he was a lab technician who was fired from Spheerical. He tells her that there was nothing about human tests in the archives of the company and that he's convinced they were faked. However, weird nanobots fly towards the car and set it on fire. Kara gets out safely due to her superpowers, but the whistleblower is killed.

Kara goes to CatCo to ask James to find her some records about Spheerical but Snapper tries to intercede. Kara overhears when he's interviewing a trial participant and goes to spy on him. The participant admits that he didn't actually do any tests right before tiny robots hurtle towards the apartment. SUPERGIRL bursts in and manages to save Snapper's life.

Jack shows up at Lena's office to try to convince her to go to dinner with him. He asks "Do you have fun here?" and reminisces about their old times working together as partners. He says that he misses her and she's clearly charmed and agrees to go to dinner with him. By this point, I knew that I didn't exactly trust Jack, but also couldn't blame Lena...that accent!

Kara arrives back at her apartment and is freaking out to Mon-El (side note: are they just living together now?). He interrupts to tell her that Lena called to ask her to convince her not to go to dinner with Jack. The two quickly set off to find Lena. They awkwardly join Lena and Jack at their table, even though it's clear they're not welcome. Lena tells Kara, "I appreciate the rescue, but it's not necessary." Honestly, I would rescue any friend of mine who seemed that cozy with her ex!

Kara asks Jack about the human trials and his answer is vague. This prompts Lena to inquire how he finally cracked the code they had been working on together. He tells her that when he was missing her, he realized he needed to model the nano-swarm after bees. Mon-El sees that it's time for him and Kara to go and they make a swift exit, but not before Mon-El uncomfortably hugs Jack. Of course, he wasn't just trying to bond; he actually stole Jack's security badge.

Back at Lena's office, Jack apologizes to her for making her choose between their relationship and L-Corp. She admits that she often wonders what it would have been liked if she stayed and they kiss.

Mon-El and Kara break into Jack's office at Spheerical and log into his computer. They find proof that there were no human trials and a video that shows that Jack is the swarm of nanobots that has been killing people. Back at L-Corp, Jack rushes off and turns into the nanobot swarm. Kara and Mon-El are able to put the information they need onto a thumb drive and escape in time.

The next morning, Kara shows Lena the video and she's obviously heartbroken. Lena asks to talk to Jack first, but Kara requests that she stay away for her own safety. Lena promises not to see him, but it's oh-so-obviously a lie just like when your friend promises not to text that boy again.

Kara goes to Snapper and gives him the info she's gathered. She admits that she's learned a lot from him and that she knows that sometimes making sure the truth is heard is more important than the reporter's individual glory. I really admire that Kara is willing to give up a byline for the sake of people knowing the truth.

No surprise, Lena has gone to see Jack. She confronts him, but it soon becomes obvious that he's legitimately confused. His assistant, Beth, emerges and freezes him in place. It turns out that she's the one who has been in control and Jack doesn't even remember killing the people. She wants to control Lena, and hence L-Corp, as well but SUPERGIRL flies in to save the day. There's a struggle between the four, however, Lena finally gets through to Jack and he stops fighting them. In order to kill the nanobots, Lena has to kill Jack which she tearfully does.

Kara brings Lena flowers and apologizes for what happened. While Beth is in jail, Lena is worried that this loss is going to turn her into her mother. She says, "Loss does strange things to my family and I have lost a lot of people." Kara comforts her, hugging her and saying, "You don't have to be afraid; I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere." To be honest, I'm worried about Lena's mental and emotional state as well. I do, however, absolutely love Lena and Kara's friendship as I think the portrayal of strong non-competitive female friendships in the media is so important for young girls to see.

Kara arrives at CatCo with a Danish for Snapper. He reveals that he bakes too--and that he put her name on the byline for the article about Jack Spheer alongside his. He tells her that her interview with the whistleblower put them ahead of every other news organization and even states, "You did a good job, Danvers." Kara is excited and a little confused when he offers her job back.

The episode ends with Rhea coming to Lena's office with a business proposition for her. This can only end badly. However, if it leads to an episode with more screen-time for Mon-El, I won't complain.

The subplot of this episode is that Winn wants Lyra to work with the Guardian. James is hesitant to allow her to help as she used to be a criminal, but reluctantly agrees. On their first mission together, The Guardian doesn't fight the criminal because he's a kid. When Lyra g oes after him, James is upset. Winn tries to break to Lyra gently that they don't want her helping anymore, but she completely flips out on him. Later, James apologizes to Winn for causing issues between them and tells him, "It's been a while since I've had a best friend. You're my brother and I haven't felt like that since Clark" in a very sweet moment. James has invited Lyra back to rejoin their crime-fighting unit, much to Winn's delight. Personally, this part of the episode felt a bit like filler. I've never been a big fan of Lyra and this plotline made me like her even less.

We only have four episodes left this season and both Cat Grant and Superman will be returning. I'm curious to see the state of Kara and Mon-El's relationship at the end of the season. What is Rhea's proposition for Lena? And how is Lyra working with The Guardian going to work out?

Don't forget to tune back in next week for another episode of SUPERGIRL and check back for my next recap.
