The Tabard Theatre presents the premiere of Gareth Armstrong’s latest play, Round About Hogarth where painter and player collide in a witty battle of egos.
Chiswick’s most famous resident, William Hogarth, was the preeminent English artist of the eighteenth century. David Garrick, who revolutionised the English stage, was that century’s greatest actor. Masters of their respective arts, the self-assured Garrick proclaims the stage superior, putting their tender friendship to the test. However, Hogarth has a counter-stroke up his sleeve, one that will lay bare their professional disputes.
Round About Hogarth explores the unlikely friendship between these two fiercely opposing temperaments who dominated their tumultuous age. They reveal their loyalties, rivalries, shared passions, and love of good wine in this play full of insight and humour.
Gareth Armstrong is an acclaimed actor, director, and playwright. As a founding director of Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre and a seasoned performer with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he has enjoyed a distinguished career both on stage and behind the scenes. His work at the Tabard includes the premieres of A Critical Stage and Fondly Remembered, while his award-winning Shylock has been performed across the world.
