Acclaimed Australian director Baz Luhrmann has announced he will be making his award-winning film Strictly Ballroom into a stage musical.

Luhrmann will begin workshops on the production in Sydney in December.

He says he will announce the location and date of the premiere at a later date.

Strictly Ballroom the film was co-written and directed by Luhrmann.

It was based on a play he conceived, co-wrote and directed as a student at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney.

Strictly Ballroom won the 1992 Cannes Film Festival's Prix de la Jeunesse, was nominated for best picture in the comedy or musical category at the Golden Globes and won three BAFTAs.

Luhrmann says the story has always been very personal to him as it was drawn from his childhood experiences in the world of ballroom dancing.

"The creative and life ideals of the story - that being that a life lived in fear is a life half-lived; and creativity triumphing over creative oppression, the belief there's always more than just one way (to cha cha cha) are ideals I live and create by to this day," he said.

The musical will be produced for Global Creatures by Carmen Pavlovic and Rob Brookman.
