Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Tour#1
Posted: 12/12/09 at 6:33pm
So a fried of mine just got out from seeing the opening night of the Les Mis 25th Anniversary tour in Cardiff.

Changes include Prologue being set on a boat.

This was a pretty well-known change, and aside from the obvious there have no been no drastic changes to the show.

On to Gareth Gates. He was, apparently, really good as Marius, and friendly to meet at the stage door!

More to come when I go and see the show next week!

I saw the show last night and very much enjoyed it! I met Earl Carpenter, Gareth Gates, John Owen Jones & Ashley Artus and they were very nice. I did miss Madalena Alberto, Jon Robyns & Katie Hall but I'm seeing the show again in January so I'll try and see them then. The cast itself was incredible and the sets and costumes were very much impressive, especially the virtual effects such as Javert falling in the river! Overall a fantastic night!!

I saw this last night and loved it, I've never seen Les Mis (oh the shame I know!) so can't compare set/changes etc, but for me the whole production worked well.

John Owen Jones was excellent, as I expected really, and Gareth Gates was good-as I had hoped. Despite the running commentary from the people behind me 'oh he'll be on in a minute' 'oh there he is' 'Oh but he's no Michael Ball'-these people find me in the theatre!!

The ensemble was strong and overall a great introduction to les Mis! (and about time too!)

Great they doing a 25th anniversary tour, however they should do something spectacular to mark it's 25th birthday, something like a free Les Miserable concert in Hyde Park, with great past stars again?

There rumours of a concert at the O2 (Kerry Ellis has 'apparantely' been asked to be Fantine).

Hope a concert does happen with an all star (I mean West End and Broadway star) cast

I'd rather see Lea Salonga as Fantine than Kerry Ellis.

I've heard the O2 rumour too, but not Kerry Ellis. There are always rumours linking her with all sorts, so I don't tend to take them seriously anyway. I'd like there to be a special show, but I'm not sure about another mish mash of cast.

I've only heard great things about the Cardiff show so far. Great staging, great visuals, sound and cast. It's press night tomorrow, and apparently someone from The Times was attending rehearsals, so it should get good coverage.

As much as i'd love a concert, nothing would top the TAC, so most fans would be left disappointed...unless they literally re-did the TAC, which again just wouldn't be as good. Michael Ball in his 40's as a student?

Would love to see Alun Armstrong make a return as Thenardier, however!

Most fans would have the TAC on DVD, so a repeat would be a disappointment as well as a cop out.

A lot of time and effort has gone into this tour. JOJ has said he thinks this is the best cast he's worked with, and Camac said "one of the best", so I don't see the point in going to the effort to get a great cast, and to cherry pick some of the best from the WE show, and to tour them for months, just to dump it for something old fo a fancy celebration.

I personally would love a new 'dream cast' and I disagree the Albert Hall one was in any way definitive. Ive always found Michael Ball too hammy as an actor and his Marius has never been a favourite. Fingers crossed it happens

I have heard more than one rumours now that a cast recording of this tour will be made, which will, in theory, replace the international (symphonic) cast recording!

Would be FAB if this happened, as the new orchestrations are BEAUTIFUL!

Let's hope it's complete.

I hope there is a recording made, as that would secure JOJ's place as one of the definitive Valjean's, and IMO, the second best ever...

Do you happen to know if they're the same orchestrations that were used for the recent Broadway revival (and I believe can be heard on the 2008 Dutch revival cast recording)? Little things like removing the cello ostinato from 'Who am I' really bug me about those...

I just heard that there is to be a live cast recording and they will be taking the tour back to the Barbican.

I guessed if there was going to be a new recording it would be a live one. Any further tour dates after Bristol anyone heard of?

The cast are saying they don't know, but on a BBC Wales interview they did say that it would be nice to go to Ireland, which I took as a hint. Either that or they would just like to go to Ireland!

To those of you who've seen this in Cardiff, what time did it finish?/What time did you get out of the Millennium Centre?

It is. Lucky Manchester people, but the original venue sold out so quickly it was unreal. It's on 10th to 21 August.
